[SOLVED] FPS drops - GPU (CPU?) throttling? 3dMark results inside

Hi folks.

I was encountering a few issues with massive FPS drops in games (Gloomhaven and Cyberpunk are 2 examples) and decided to do some tests, but need help interpreting the results.

My working assumption is that the power is throttling the GPU/CPU (although the GPU results/FPS were fine in tests) but I can't seem to replicate outside of games. I did try Prime95 and it ran fine for 2 hours on the torture test, so CPU seems stable.

The PC is 9 months old but this seems to be a new problem (or worsening). In-game, what I see frequently:
  • GPU utilisation drops from 99% to <30%
  • CPU utilisation spikes to 85%
  • GPU power drops significantly at the same time
  • lasts ~10 seconds then back to normal

PC:
RTX 3070
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor
BIOSTAR Group B550MH
2x 8gb 2660Mhz RAM
Gigabyte P650B 650W 80+ Bronze power supply

Any help diagnosing will be much appreciated!

Not sure but it does sound like a throttling issue that I had although it seems that the temperatures were fairly constant for both gpu and cpu in your stats.

Perhaps someone more savvy can interpret the results better than me.

CPU Temps hit 100c 3 times during the CPU test, CPU should shut the system down when it hits around 95? Perhaps the CPU is thermal throttling?

Yes I think you could be right - and several of those CPU temp spikes seem to correlate with CPU Mhz spikes. Perhaps something is causing the CPU Mhz to spike, which is then causing the temp spike?

Altho interesting that the first big CPU temp spike over 100c doesn't seem to correlate with a change in CPU Mhz...
