Fractal R5 Fan Controller only one 1 speed

Just transferred to the Fractal R5.

Have connected the SATA power and the Fan plugs (2 fans)

The fans are spinning but but when i move the fan controller, i cant see or hear them go any faster or slower. So unsure if the controller switch is working??

Also, the SATA power cable had a weird Type3 cable. Unsure what that is so just unplugged it.

Any advice?

What fan controller do you have and how many pins on the fan header do you have?

I have the same case and purchased Fractal fans with NZXT Sentry fan controller. Works like a dream.

Are you also sure the fans are connected to the fan controller directly and no to the mobo?

Defo not to the mobo.

Its the standard controller that comes as part of the R5. Standard 3 pins i think

Do you make sure it was installed properly and there are no loose connections?

I tried to look for documentation on the fan controller but there isnt much out there. You may need to make a mobo change to allow the fans to be controlled via the controller instead of the mobo, but because there is no good documentation, cant say for sure.

Docs for the case are reasonably clear here

Not sure what you mean about "Also, the SATA power cable had a weird Type3 cable. Unsure what that is so just unplugged it." The power input to the case's controller is simply a cable with a SATA power connector on its end that plugs into a common SATA power output from the PSU. Then each fan plugs into a output connector form the case's front switch. As a "fan controller" it is pretty simple - all it does is use a couple resistors to change the power supplied to each fan through three possible speeds (plus Off).

You DO have the option to connect the two included case fans to mobo headers to allow the mobo to do automatic control of them for you, and forget the front case switch. That is, IF your mobo can do that. The fans are standard 3-pin units. Tell us the maker and exact model number of your mobo, and we can advise how to do this if you wish.

This is what i mean. This is attached. I unplugged and just used the SATA power from my PSU. Unsure what this is

My MOBO is Msi P55-GD65 (old)

I am not sure exactly what the cable is for, but you are correct - you do not need it.

Putting the fans under automatic mobo control will be easy. The 3-pin fans with the case require a header that uses the correct control method, and ALL three of the SYS_FAN headers on your mobo do just that. So for each of those two fans you can plug it into a SYS_FAN1 or 2 header (the CPU cooler goes into the CPU_FAN header). The manual is fuzzy on SYS_FAN3 , so maybe don't use that. Now look at your manual on p. 3-2. It says Press the "Del" key during the boot process to enter BIOS Setup. I find I just hold that key down until the opening screen of Setup shows. See p. 3-4, and choose H/W Monitor to get to the fan configuration items on p. 3-15. Choose each SYS_FAN item in turn and, if necessary, set the Target and Minimum Fan Speed. I think the "Target" is a temperature target for a sensor on the mobo - not sure. The minimum fan speed often is about 40% - it is whatever it takes to keep the fan from stalling at low speed. You may find that there already are default values there that do not need changing until you have some running experience. IF you make any changes, remember to use the F10 key to SAVE your changes and EXIT, which will reboot your machine.

Many thanks for this. I'll give it go
