How can you tell if you are roaming as a Free Up Prepaid Customer? I
placed a call outside my home market, but within the natoinwide coverage
area over the weekend... and was told to re-enter the phone # I was
calling before it would connect me. Was that a signal that I was going
to incur roaming charges?

Thanks,
Eric

That may mean you were just outside of your home service area.

Did you phone say "Verizon Wireless" or "Extended Network" or Roaming?

Hi Dave,

I think it still said "Verizon Wireless". Will it say "Extended
Network" if I am roaming?

Thanks,
Eric

Depending on the phone, you may see "Roaming" even on other Verizon
networks, but that doesn't mean you're paying for it. I'm pretty sure
most phones with a FreeUp PRL (likely "Tri-Mode Default") do NOT show
"Extended Network", since there is no such thing for FreeUp/Prepay...
i.e. if you're on an Alltel network, you will be charged for roaming,
where an America's Choice customer would not be.

So, here's how you tell.

* If you dial the number directly and are not prompted to dial the
number again, you're on your home SID or one associated with it. No
extra charge.

* If you dial the number, then have to dial the called number again,
and that's it, you're on a VZW SID, and you won't be charged roaming
as well.

* If you dial the number, then have to dial the called number again,
and then have to dial your own number and PIN, you're on a non-VZW
SID, and you'll be charged (likely) roaming for the call. On this
call, you'll likely hear the recording "You may be charged additional
roaming fees for this call".

It's been a long time since I've used prepay/FreeUp, so I don't know
if this is still the way it operates.

This is not all "hard and fast" - for example, VZW and Alltel share a
SID in southeast Ohio, western PA and West Virginia (32), and I don't
remember being charged roaming for calls on SID 32 in the Alltel
areas. But since Alltel is a preferred network for America's Choice,
they may not be worrying too much about fixing that.

There should be some kind of "Roaming Indicator" on the phone. My Moto
V120c has a small triangle at the top of the screen when it roams.

The fact that you were asked to re-dial the number COULD mean you were
either in a roaming area - or - because of busy traffic in the area,
your phone was connecting to another carrier's tower and they are not
roaming partners with VZW.

In any case, the message will tell you that roaming charges apply.

BTW, you can call in and check to see how many minutes have been used.
You can also check on-line and see what they charged you for that
call.

On weekends, FreeUp phone will use the free weekend minutes (which get
replenished when you ReUp for $30 or more). Calls - even roaming call
- on weekends will be deducted from these free minutes and not from
your paid minutes.

If you post info about your phone - someone should be able to tell you
what the roaming indicator looks like.

No, not necessarily. When I was in Dayton last year, my FU phone
always asked for the number again for every call I made. It even did
it for calls to my regular VZW phone, which I had with me also. I
never got hit with any roaming fees.
