Fresh build, all new components. Installed Win 7 Home Premium from a USB as per ASUS instructions for the H170 board. Windows runs, but I can't install any updates except for the first 3; windows update agent 7.6.7600.320, update for windows (kb2685811) and update for windows (kb958488).

I have network connection and internet, but can't get to any sites.

I reformatted and re-installed win 7 from the same disc I copied to USB. I've used this disc a few times, and then bought keys for other computers. No problems like this.

I tried doing the IE reset that MS recommends. Nothing.

I tried installing IE10 and latest Firefox from USB. Nothing.

The only drivers I have installed are the MOBO and GPU from the discs.

I'm running 6600k, 16 gb ram, Evga 970 gtx, asus h170 -a mobo.

Any ideas??? Very frustrating.

I want to say I bought it online a few years ago. I've used it to upgrade Vista and XP computers in the past along with one other new build besides this one. I bought new keys for all of those computers. No problems like this. I have had 2 keys that I bought online crap out on me a few months later, but the seller's emailed me new ones. I'm going to try and reuse my current key that's for this disc on the computer I'm replacing and to take it out of commission.

Side note, I skipped the authenticate screen when I was loading Windows on this new computer. I don't think that's the problem though. Like I mentioned before, after I've got this one all updated, I'm going to put my old key on this new computer.

Even if I bought a new license key, reusing the same disc shouldn't matter as far as the updates are concerned if I skipped the enter product key code screen.

I forgot to mention that those 2 keys that crapped out were for 2 separate computers. All the other computers I upgraded got new keys as well, albeit a month or so later, but after I installed and fully updated them without out a hiccup.

As noted above:
"Sorry, but that is a major red flag for me."

Windows OS license costs what it costs. There is no 'cheap + valid'

I'm going to go on a limb and say that your solution is to go and buy another disc with key. Sadly none of the stores around my house only have windows 10. I could TRY and find one only, but a quick search yields digital downloads only. The disc isnt the problem. The key isnt the problem as I am not trying to run 1 key on 2 computers.

I was able to install a few updates from a windows ultimate disc, but kept getting a "desktop manager stopped working" errror. But I wised up and used my wireless connection for those updates. It got me to thinking about reinstalling win 7 home premium again and using my wireless connection for that. Guess what?! It worked. I was able to download all 214 updates late last night. Plus 5 more just now. Now I need to deactivate my key on my old computer that is incompatible due to processor onto this new computer. And to think I was about to go to office depot and BUY windows 10.

Unless something catastrophic happens, knock on wood, I solved my own problem. Only took 6 re-installs and using the wireless connection.
