Hi i currently have a 7950 which is turning 4 years old now and its almost ''dead'' since its been crashing and acting weird so im looking for an upgrade. I have a coolermaster silent pro gold 600W PSU so i excluded the 390 for my purchase. I cant get any 960 for 250 euros and for 970's i really want the FTW+ which is 420 euros... Strix versions and G1 are 390 euros. My question is will it be an upgrade or a downgrade to go for the cheaper choice which is the 960. It quite a difference in moeny so i am really considering it.

that is why a GOOD ( tier 1 or 2 unit ) 650w+ is recommended for a 290(x)/390(x)

Im getting mixed messages here... I am not going to overclock and i am gaming at 60 hz 1080p. I do not want the 970 now that its more expensive and almost the same but usually worse and older than the 390. So is it a very risky upgrade? I mean how bad is my psu, i thought it was a good purchase

Actually the 390 is older, it is a renamed 290 that has been overclocked at the factory.

it is a tier 3 unit and underpowered to boot.

Will it run?, maybe.

For how long? who knows. You want to play roulette with your 390?

So i have a bad and old psu, and i either have to buy a worse card with 3,5fb of memory with mostly less fps? Come on guys, i mean im not going to stress the card and get my psu to peak right? I have seen people with 550w run it

Personally, I don't think your PSU is "bad", all the reviews I've read actually say it's good. Only thing that lets it down are a few capacitors that are rated for 85°C, but most of them are 105°C. Also it has a rated continuous load of 600W and a peak of 720W. http://www.ocinside.de/review/coolermaster_silent_pro_gold_600/

Don't know how you have come to that conclusion. Yes, if you had a piece of crap PSU it would be a huge risk. As I said before, everything I have read about your PSU says it's good and the only "fault" is a couple of lower rated capacitors. Your PSU is not like those ones in the Youtube video that was linked to this thread, the ones that blow below their rated wattage....here is a real world test of your PSU, also go to last page to read conclusion http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/cooler-master-silent-pro-gold-600w-psu-review,6.html

I honestly can't see any reason why you can't get a 390, just don't go overclocking it. Can I 100% say you will never have any issues with your PSU? Of course I can't, any PSU can fail. Would I take that risk? Yes, I am right now with a 600W PSU on a oc i5 and 290X. Look, it's up to you if you are willing to take a slight risk, nothing in life is 100% guaranteed.
