FS2: How do you run movies with no-cd???

I've done a full v. 1.02 install and used the no-cd crack so I can run w/o
the CD's. I've copied all the cutscene movies into the main game directory,
but the game still looks for them on my CD drive so it's no go. I don't see
any obvious .cfg that would allow me to redirect. Does anybody have a
solution for this? Thanks for any info.

Get a better no-cd crack?

Perhaps you could use the M$DOS subst command to pretend to the game
that the CD is actually your hard drive. It would take a bit of
messing about though, and could affect other apps that needed to see
the CD.

Not a big enough deal for me to change everything around. I've already got
a utility that lets me view the movie files separately....or I could just
insert the CD when prompted. I was just hoping I could get the game to run
in its entirety off the HD.

According to GameCopyWorld, you just copy the .MVE files
into the games root directory. Did you copy them to the right
place? Or maybe some subfolder?

I copied them to the game's root directory, but no go when I try to look at
the intro movie. Instead, I get the "insert CD" prompt. I'm using the GCW
1.02 crack, but I didn't copy the .mve files over till after I executed the
crack (heh, heh, I was a little sloppy about reading the
instructions).....maybe that's the problem. I'll repeat the process and see
what happens.

Whoa, I just checked GCW and didn't see anything in the instructions for
applying the 1.02 "all" crack about copying over the .mve files. Where did
you see those instructions? Have I missed something here? After I got the
"insert CD," I copied over the .mve files because, well, it seems the right
thing to do to get it to work. I've got the "Sci-Fi Sim of the Year"
edition of FS2 which is v. 1.02 "out of the box"....so I didn't have to
patch it before applying the crack. Also, I did the full install.....which
doesn't apparently include copying the .mve files over to the hd, as I had
to do that manually.

It's actually noted in the German 1.20 crack section.
Just at the bottom of it, in a darker gray line:

NOTE: To see the movies copy them (*.MVE) in the game directory.

I haven't tried this yet, have yet to install the game. I will probably
just
deal with the discs.. unless you figure it out before I get it going :)

I'll do my best for you. I may reinstall the game; maybe I missed something
during the initial install. As always happens for me, getting the movies to
run properly with the crack has now become more important than actually
playing the game. :)

I hate running any game with CD's because of the initial "leaf-blower"
effect from the DVD/CD drive. Also, I switch from game to game during the
course of the day and don't like to constantly have to switch CD's. It's
bad enough I have to put up with the cooling fan(s) of my 6800 card which
constantly goes up and down in pitch like a hedge-trimmer. In fact, after I
got this pc, I thought I WAS hearing a hedge-trimmer a couple of yards away
(there are always gardeners working in my neighborhood so such sounds are
common during the day). Then, one night I was playing at 1:00 am and was
still hearing that hedge-trimmer. I suddenly realized it was my video card,
heh, heh.

Hey, have you tried using a virtual CD manager? 🙂

Daemon-Tools (freeware) for example:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/portal.php

Then instead of having to swap CDs, you can just leave them
mounted as virtual drives (as if each CD were always inserted-
but running off the HD). It works great. 🙂

[Not tested it with FS2, mind you, but just an idea...]

Yeah, I'm aware of Daemon. I just haven't had enough incentive to try it.
No-cd .exe's are almost instantly available for every new game. Besides,
how would I be able to play new games that won't install, if you have Daemon
Tools or similar utilities installed? 😉

A good solution is to make images of your CDs and using a virtual CD
program. I haven't tried this but it should work.
