full cover GPU blocks VS universal ones

Hi, i was wondering what the difference is between the 2 types of blocks.

Obviously, the full cover blocks cool the VRM but does this even matter? What happens to VRM cooling if u use a universal block?

From what i can tell the universal blocks are cheaper and can be used on multiple cards. The only downside i can see is that theyre not as goof looking.

Is there anything i am missing? Why do so many people invest £100's on blocks which theyll only be able to use for 3 years as the GPU's will become outdated>

Solution
Because the VRMs supply power to everything else on the board. If they overheat they will not deliver stable power and the GPU will crash, simple as that. Universal blocks tend to cover the GPU only. Most commonly with universal blocks you also add heatsinks to the memory and vrms and make sure there is good case air flow over the cards.

Plenty of more universal cooling solutions that are just fine as they provide additional cooling for VRMs. G10 bracket from NZXT, EVGA has an all-in-one adapter out with a fan.

Thanks for the reply. Where would one buy these heatsinks?

Performance-PCs.com if you are in the US basically. They sell pretty much every cooling device on the market.

FrozenCPU.com website is still up, but the company is actually closed.

UK: overclock.co.uk or AriaPC and I am forgetting one I am sure.

thanks. Yeah they are great. I spent around £18 on insurance for a relatively large order and stupidely managed to short out my 970. I thought i was completely fuc**d but realised i had brought the insurance. I simply had to send it back and they sent me a brand new one!
