Hello guys I'm going to build a video editing rig for my friend and want to ask you if
FX processors are good for it? Never used it in the past... So that's why this question came up...
Now I know it is an old socket and all but 8 cores for the price of 75-85€ CPU seems fantastic :) (this is FX-8300).

Also there is FX-8370 - 148€.

Mind you I did just a quick search in one online store. There might be better choices for the buck in FX section and all... Never mind about that for now :)

As usual people want to build ''something good'' cheaply so that is why FX seems interesting.

As for ryzen cheapest ryzen R5 1600 would be about 180€. Is it a huge performance gain compared to FX series?

Intel is probably out of question because it is pricey unless picked used.. Do not know how my friend feels about used parts tho''

So in short:

1. Are FX series good for video editing rigs?
2. Does ryzen give a great performance gain compared to FX cpu's not taking into account that it is a newer platform and ect. Probability is that my friend would not upgrade this rig in a long run but just buy a new pc all together again ;))

If you need more info or anything type below. And thank you in advance for the answers ;))

Solution
1) they used to be, back in the day. outdated now.
2) ryzens are much faster, between 40 and 50% per each core. for video editing, ryzen 5 1600 is 76% faster than fx 8370. not to mention that you can also get 2nd gen ryzen, r5 2600, which is 90% faster than fx in multithreaded tasks.

In short: go with ryzen 5 2600x or, if possible, 2700x which has 8 cores and 16 threads. Video editing benefits greatly from each and every core.

Okay guys! Thank you for your input ;)
Never used FX series so I was really curious. I knew they kind sucked for gaming and ran kinda hot but with water cooling heat shouldn't be a problem. But okay ;)) I'll probably go for ryzen, I'll check intel but price will definitely bite.. :D

Me myself used i7-3770s and now ryzen 1700x for video editing and they are really good :p Ryzen is kinda a god's gift considering the price :p

Yeah but when I was building my PC it just got released also I was reaching my budget limit so it was out of question as it is 70€ more expensive than 1700x :/ So in my case it wasn't worth it also I'm happy with 1700x :p

And in the future I'll upgrade to something better.. hoping amd will support am4 socket with new stuffies :3

As for my friend build you helped a lot ;)) Probably gonna go for 1600 if budget allows if not.. I''ll find alternatives in lower ryzens or intel counter parts :p
