I bought G.Skill Ares (2x8gb) 2400mhz [F3-2400C11D-16GAB]
to go on my Asus z97-A mobo.

But I made a noob mistake and just thought that the mobo accepting that memory speed would therefore allow the memory to work.

It's in the mail already unfortunately. I caught my mistake too late. But since the asus mobo not listed on the G.skill websites QVL, and nor is this memory listed in the QVL for the asus mobo am I screwed?

Should I even try to pop it in to see if it will work? or just send it back for something else that is surely QVL compatible with my mobo?

Solution
They should work fine with your mobo, a lot depends on your CPU as to how fast they can run, if you have a K model CPU they should run at 2400 (spec) by simply enabling XMP - however you may need a slight OC on the CPU (depending which you have)...If you have a non-K CPU then should be able to run at 1866 or maybe 2133 - any problems, give me a shout 😉
You should have no problem running the ram on the Z97 A.

Those lists are never complete or 100% accurate.

G.Skill Ares (2x8gb) 2400mhz [F3-2400C11D-16GAB]

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 3200(O.C.)/3100(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Gskill hasn't tested these on any z97 boards. It works fine on the z87-a so will probably work find on yours too. It uses 1333 @ 1.5 in its SPD which should allow you to boot up just fine. You'll need to enable XMP to get the higher speeds

Solution
hey,

since i found this topic regarding a question i have, i will post my question here and hope for you to reply. :)

i want to build a new computer, but it has been over 5 years that i looked into hardware.
also i never put a build together, so i am unexperienced. i did some reading on this website beforehand and tried to get at least a grasp of what is going on at the moment.
i was hoping that you maybe can check my build and tell me what might be issues with this build.

i want this pc to be optimal for playing counter strike, as i am getting into the new version of the game - CS:GO.
what i found out is that cpu matters most, gpu is not that relevant for the game. also it should be a small pc, so i can take it with me to LAN events, etc.
the price factor is also relevant to me since i want to buy a new monitor as well. the system should not be over 600 €.

with that in mind i put this list together:

So I am in a similar boat, I've got a locked Xeon with 2400 RAM, on a Z97-E asus mobo. I've enabled XMP, but I can't actually tell if the RAM is running at 2400. In the BIOS it states that the RAM is at 1333, but I think that just means the BIOS recognizes that as it's stock speed. Up in the top left corner of the UEFI it shows the RAM speed as 2400, but it doesn't state whether that's the actual speed or just what it's set to be at.
Is there a program that will test my memory speed when I'm in Windows?
