i want to upgrade my gigabyte g31 , i currently have p4 in it ! need help to upgrade it to dual or quad core ! please suggest me a good processor which isn't discontinued ! and i have RAM of 3 gb !
Thanks a lot guys! U know everyone I talked about this, suggested me to change it all and buy a new CPU but I was just thinking if I can upgrade this old one only! I search if I can find the new one rather then the used one!
The problem you will be facing is that prices for unused LGA775 CPUs are expensive. I am still using a Q9450 which I bought back in 2008. I think I paid around $375 for it back then because of the huge demand for it. Intel's suggested price was about $315. New Q9450 can still purchased, but at above Intel's suggested retail price. The cheapest one is selling $366 at Amazon.
If so then you can use any Socket 775 CPU on it. Only thing is I doubt you will find anything new. Will have to find something used. And also max ram is 4GB on this guys too.

I still got a 775 so don't feel bad haha I was using a E4600 for like 5 years. Just got a q6600 so finally got a quad core haha. I do gaming and 3D animation and my Q6600, 6GB of Ram, and GTX 260 work just fine for me.

For less than $366 you can essentially upgrade to a current generation quad core i5-4430 (3.0GHz) CPU, a motherboard for it and 8GB of RAM. That would completely dominate a system with a Q9450 CPU.

You would be better off changing it all. It doesn't take much to get a far better system than what you have now. Are you currently running a discrete GPU or using the motherboard's graphics?
thank u for ur reply guys ! a big thank u to each and everyone of u ! but as most of people told me to change it all ! i just wanna ask u if this processor and motherboard will b a good CPU !
Wow...IF you plan on gettings any of those two systems your better off getting a Used Core 2 Quad. Those are both on the low end. You can get a Q9550 which is pretty much to the top of the line for the 775 socket from like 100-150. I got a Q6600 and i think i'm gonna get a Q9550. Yea those are better than when you got but if you get a whole new system you might as well go big or just upgrade what you got.
With all due respect to everyone ! and at the risk of sounding stupid ! Can i say that , i just found a new e8400 with LGA775 ! so will it improve my CPU performance if i change it from P4 to E8400 ? Just the processor changing ! RAM and MOBO will be the same as it is on P4 i.e. gigabyte g31 and DDR2 - 3GB . Please ignore me being stupid and help me ! ONE MORE THING , E8400 is a 64bit , so i dont know if my mobo can support it or it doesnt make any difference !
That motherboard can support ANY 775 socket CPU pretty much. A E8400 would be a VERY NICE improvement over the P4 Chip. And yes it is 64 bit but if you are running a 32 bit windows you don't need to change anything. Just if you want to harness all the power you will have to reinstall windows with a 64 bit version but you should still be fine with 32 bit and still see a BIG difference.

thank u so much dear ! u helped me alot in all this ! and as u told me i will definitely install windows w 64bit ! thank u once again ! May god bless u !
thank u so much dear , for all ur help ! but just one thing more ! u think if i have
E8400 - PROCESSOR and G31 - MOBO and DDR2 3GB RAM
i just wanna ask can IF it support a graphic card also ? if yes, then which one ? a bit stupid in this technical world ! sorry !
As long as the motherboard has a PCI-E x16 slot for graphics, any PCI-E graphics card will work. Then it becomes a matter of what your power supply is.
HEY ! THANKS FOR THE HELP , BUT I M A BIT CONFUSED HERE ! COZ AS U TOLD ME , I NEED - PCI-E x16 BUT I ONLY FIND - PCI-E 2.0 x16 Bus Std , PCI-E 3.0 x16 Bus Std ! SO IS IT ALL SAME OR ITS DIFFERENT ? I DONT KNOW WHAT 2.0 AND 3.0 MEANS IN THIS ! and one more thing , all these have specification saying , 1GB DDR3 memory , where else i have DDR2 RAM , i dont know even if its related or not !
1) Your motherboard DOES have a PCI-e x16 slot for graphics cards. The whole 2.0 3.0 is what generation it is. Its like USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 They are FULLY backwords compatible so any PCI-e x16 graphics card of Gen 1 2 or 3 will fit and work in any gen 1 2 or 3 PCI-e x16 slot so don't worry about that.
2) As lagainofhades said if you just want a basic card that DOESN'T require extra power using these 6 or 8 pin PCI-e connectors here
But if it DOES use that then you will make to then see what the minimum power requirements are (most video cards is at LEAST 500 Watt Power Supply) and then see if 1) Your power supply meets that requirement (It will say on the Power Supply if you open up the case and look at it) and 2) Have all the reqired Power Connectors. Note: Some PSU's have a dual connector for the 12v powe for the mother board. You only need a 4 pin connector for it but some have a 4 pin and an 8 pin that newer motherboards use. Don't get that confused with the PCI-e Power. IT WILL NOT FIT if you try to plug it in.
Otherwise if it doesn't require any extra power any card will pretty much do. The highest card you can get is either a AMD 7750 or the New Nvidia 750Ti are the most powerful video cards that don't require any extra power.
Also most video cards come with 1 Gigabyte of ram and can go up to 4-6 on the high end ones and ever up to 12 on the video cards used from Graphics and Video design. If you plan to play games even 1 gb is enough for some. Mine only has 896 and it turns most games great. Your computer memory it self is DDR2 so when you get a Video card don't confuse DDR3 or GDDR3 or GDDR5 or anything with your computer memory. That is dedicated memory on the Video card it self. Note: You CAN NOT UPGRADE the memory on the video card without getting a whole new video card.
GTX 750ti, even if your cpu would hold it back some, would be a great buy. You could always reuse it if you are able to upgrade to a more modern CPU. The less expensive non ti 750 is a nice little card as well compared to an HD 7750.
When it comes to Nvidia cards the low the second two number the lower the performance. I had a GTS430 and that was Ok on some games. a 750Ti for like the 150 bucks that it is is the best thing you can get and if you go with that you won't have any issue using it on any future PC either.
Buy yea the 210 is NOT a gaming card. Any X10 X20 X30 (Where X is either 2, 4, 5, or 6) is not a gaming card. They could do like WOW or something low end but don't expect to play anything high end on those
None of the x10 or x20 series cards will do WoW well. For 1080p I wouldn't want anything less than a GTX 650, and even that would require stepping down to fair settings to get decent FPS.
thank u so much ! coz that's my main point ! i mean , i m not much of a gamer ! i just want my CPU to support 1080p ! coz now it doesn't play 1080p , it just hangs everytime!
