I'm in the process of upgrading my pc and whilst I consider myself competant enough to build one I don't know anything about OCing and only really know the basics. I'm not looking to OC as I just want a fast reliable stable pc. I'm a photgrapher so my primary usage is in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop hence I run 16GB RAM minimum. I also do some live video streaming (not editing just streaming) via Ustream with multiple cameras.

Lightroom supports multi-core CPUs so I'm looking to upgrade from my 4 core to the 8 core FX-9590.

My main question is whether this kit is going to run ok on a 750w PSU. I blew my 500w so purchased a 750w with a view to upgrading to a FX-8350 (draws 125w) but am now looking at the 9590 (draws 220w). I don't really want to have to replace a 1 week old PSU if I don't have to.

This is my current set up and in brackets what I'm planning to change to:
GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev 4.0 - F2 Bios (changing to latest BIOS)
AMD FX-4170 (FX-9590)
Corsair H60 Water Cooler (H100i)
4x4GB DDR3 1866Mhz Corsair Vengance CML8GX3M2A1866C9R Radeon H7770 GPU
Blackmagic Express PCiE card
TP-Link PCIE Wifi
Startech 4 port USB 2 PCI card
3 x SSD HDD

My second question is about the RAM. I've read quite a lot of posts about the FX processors not supporting 1866 unless its one stick in on DIMM. Apparently 1600 is supported if 2x8 and if you have more than 2x8 or you use all 4 slots you are stuck with 1333 unless you try some hit and miss tweaking to try and get it up to 1600. I've read about bad things happening when trying to do this and I don't think I can justify the expense of swapping 4x4 for 2x8 for what sounds like a small increase in speed from 1333 to 1600. So my question is simply whether this rationale makes sense? Will I see get the benefit out of a fast CPU with slow RAM?

I hope I've provided enough info and thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

as MANY people say, it is NOT worth it getting the 9590. if you don't want to upgrade your motherboard to intel, get the 8350 and save your money until skylake hits the market. then get the i7 6700k, with a compatible motherboard to go with it.

So go 8350 and stick with the H60 cooler? Doesn't that leave me with 4mhz instead of 4.7 unless I OC? Sounds like quite a difference. Also can you offer any advice re PSU?

^ definitely stick with the 8350 mate - the 9590 is not worth the money ,it runs on insane voltage at a stupid temp.

Its fairly easy to get the 8350 up to 4.5ghz on a lot less voltage with a lot less heat.

Your ram will run at 1600mhz minimum - you may still be able to get it up & running at its full speed by manually tweaking in bios - I have no idea who told you 4 sticks will only run at 1333 - not true.

Ok I ordered the 8350 and I'll aim for 4.2. Will that just be a clock change in the bios or voltage too?

Also before it arrives could someone advise me how I can get the ram up to 1600?

Ibe always left my BIOS on auto so don't know what all the settings mean.

I tried changing the memory frequency to 800 but it wouldn't boot and I had to load BIOS defaults again.

Clearly it's not plug and play with any FX cpu to get the RAM to run at the advertised speed when you have more than one DIMM so how are so many of you guys doing it?

That CPU is likely to damage that motherboard over time. FX 8350 is what you want, and overclock it to 4.7 yourself and you have the 9590. Most of the times people are getting 4.6 GHz with no voltage increase. Since you already ordered it theres not much to say other than good luck. Chances are youll get to 5.0 with that cooler, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Increase voltage by 0.006250 each time to get the most out of your overclock. Look up tutorials also using the same motherboard as it can be really confusing diving into BIOS without any real knowledge of what things do.

Suzuki i never said I had ordered the 9590 and in fact in later posts have said I ordered the 8350. I've got some helpful advice here which is great but I keep getting an answer to questions I didn't ask lol. I still don't know if the PSU is gonna be ok and I've no idea how it's possible to get this RAM speed up to 1600. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Yes I know it's 800 and as I said in another post above I've tried changing the memory frequency to 800 and it wouldn't boot. As for compatibility of the 9590 with the mobo I checked and it's listed by Gigabyte as being fully compatible and its a combination I've seen many people using when I've researched it. But that doesn't matter anymore because I've ordered an 8350.

I'll try another board and see if I can get the answers I'm looking for but thanks to those that have helped me out so far.

That board "officially" supports the 220 watt AMD cpu's. That being said I wouldn't put that cpu in any board short of a Sabertooth R2. I own a UD3 R4 and a Sabertooth R2 and the UD3 has much thinner pcb, weaker power delivery, much smaller heatsinks etc.... It just won't cut it.

This is what I would do. Get anyone of the 95 watt 8 core variants. They overclock really, really well at a lower vcore. You will get performance very, very close to the 9590 using less voltage and producing less heat. Plus you will save $100 or more.

I don't know how many times I have to say this..... I have ordered an 8350!

Is this just a fun place for discussing any old <mod edit> or does anyone ever actually read and answer the questions that are actually asked?

People try to help and your being a turd. Is that a personality trait in your family? People like me see a post and answer it. Most people don't read through every post then answer. Tiger Direct has the 8310 for sale with a bundled game for $104. All AMD 8 cores are very very similar and do about the same clocks. Guys who are serious about overclocking are tending to buy the low-leakage 95 watt chips as they clock really well at a modest vcore bump and more mainstream cooling like an NH-D14 as opposed to a custom loop.

these are 4 exact matching sticks??
from what I can see that ram doesnt have a preset jedec setting for 1600mhz,the timings may be setting incorrectly (as in at 1333mhz settings when you set the ram speed at 1600 mhz in bios- this would likely create boot problems if thats whats happening.
you would then need to set all latencies/timings yourself for each stick seperately.

Thanks MadMatt30. I'll post those when I'm back from holiday in a week. And yes they are all matching sticks. It's dual band memory and from what I've read this isn't going to be supported on 4 DIMM slots at 1600 with an FX processor. I suspect you are right in that it might go up to 1600 if I set it all up manually but I have no idea how to do that as I don't know what all those timing numbers mean and how they map to a field in the bios.
