GA-P35-DS4 and DS3 Issue with USB HDD??

I was one of the many that was having TONS of problems with overclocking my DS4 board (Intel Q6600 CPU). Strangely enough, I am starting to think that my USB hard drive was giving me problems. When it is plugged in at startup, there seems to be a 50% chance that my PC is going to reset before it posts and my overclock settings will be lost.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Is this a P35 issue or a Gigabyte issue?

Any known work-arounds besides ditching the USB drive?

The only time Ive had one hooked up to my DS4 was when I brought my machine on vaca with me. My friend hooked up his external drive and I know I powered down a few times while it was connected but I dont think I ever had that problem when powering back up. I dont have an external drvei myself but I havent had any other problems with my other USB devices. Sorry I cant help more.

Yes, I have the same issue. Initially I thought it was my overclock. Then everything was working fine for a while(I had disconnected the HDD but never really thought about it). Then it started up again and would restart every single time from a cold boot. I was too busy to really deal with it for a couple weeks so I just left my PC running. When I finally got around to troubleshooting I found that when my ext. HDD was connected this happened and when it wasn't it didn't. I contributed it to my PSU being very close to it's limit (500W) and that my ext HDD (500GB Seagate Free Agent) does not run off USB power, but does need to be plugged in to start up. But maybe it's more then a power issue.

I don't think its a power issue. I wonder if its a P35 chipset issue witht he Gigabyte boards? Maybe one of the more technical folks can weigh in with their thoughts?

It doesn't happen with all boards. Mine is a GA-P35C-DS3R and I use an external HDD a lot. Never had a restart, in 7 months. USB transfer is slower than with my Dad's AMD computer, using the same external hard disk, but it works. I also use the USB with an mp3 player about twice a week - again no problems.

Maybe you guys could try with a different brand of external hard disk? Maybe I'm just lucky with my LaCie and I'd have the same problems with a FreeAgent, I don't know...

How about using eSATA? The DS4 supports it, and it's faster than USB.

Ya, let me just chuck this 500GB ext. HDD in the trash and get a new one. Honestly it's not a huge issue for me. I just leave it unplugged and plug it in when I need it and remember to unplug it when I'm done. It may be the way my Free Agent drive turns on that is the issue. It doesn't power on until it gets power from the USB, but there also isn't a switch. I'm sure I could figure out exactly what's going on, but frankly I don't care enough or I'm too busy.

LOL, don't trash it. I was thinking more of borrowing one from a friend to see if it makes a difference. If it does, then the problem is the FreeAgent. If it doesn't, it's most likely the mobo.

Damn, I was planning to buy a FreeAgent Pro but now you've scared me...

No, the HDD is fine. Like I said it's only a minor annoyance and only happens when overclocking. But if you are concerned I would recommend not getting any ext USB drive that powers on the same way. Get one with a switch.

I think I am going to try this as a fix. I am going to set up a timer for the power plug on the HDD. I'll have it kick on at 2:00 a.m. and of at 5:00 a.m. I am never reboting the PC during this time, and it will be on long enough for me to run my backups. Thats all I use this drive for anyway.

Hate to revive an old thread, but I just posted something similar. My DS4 does the EXACT same thing with my WD 500gb MyBook HD. And my hard drive requires a power brick to be plugged in at all times.

I am having trouble with a P35-DS4 when seemingly any USB device is connected and it is driving me crazy!

u might want to consider turn off your "Legacy USB device Detection" in your BIOS. it helps if i have it disabled on my P35-DS3 rev1.0.
