Gaming Monitor...4K @ 60Hz or 1440P @ 100+Hz?

I want/need a large monitor upgrade from my current 27" 1920x1200. At a minimum, 1440P and possibly 4K. Is 60Hz enough for FPS gaming? If not, which 1440P? I prefer ultra-wide. Are there any 120Hz 1440P 34" or larger monitors? Online, you get a lot of old reviews and bad information, figured I would ask here. The Acer X34 sounds great, but I hear you have to OC it to hit 100Hz where the new X34P is 100Hz without OCing. Does it matter? Are there any 120Hz 1440 34" Monitors coming out? Any suggestions?

It's hard to say without knowing what you have to drive a new screen. 4K would be useless unless you have the horsepower to drive it.

I have a 1440p 60hz monitor and I love it. It is only 60hz cause I wanted an IPS panel for work purposes (I do graphic design) and didn't want to break the bank. The benefits of IPS are a much wider viewing angle without the picture looking washed out, and generally more vibrant colors.

In my personal opinion, 1440p will serve you perfectly fine for gaming. There is still some debate over 60hz vs. 100-144hz for some competitive games, as some people do just fine at 60hz while others swear you won't be playing at "optimal" levels unless you're getting 100+ FPS (mostly regarding competitive first-person shooters).

with a gtx 970 1440p is playable with reduced settings
you are not going to be able to get 120 fps on anything newer though

you would need at least a gtx 1070



4k would be unplayable with a 970

I have no issues upgrading my GPU. Assuming that isn't an issue, do I break the bank for an X34 or are there alternatives?

I will give you my honest answer on your question.
I owned a 4k 60hz monitor. Asus PB287Q.
I upgrade my r9 290x CF to a single evga gtx 1080 ftw.
I found out that gpu are not ready for 4k yet. Games was smooth mostly sitting around 55-65fps. But I had cases where fps dropped down to 40 etc. I am talking about the latest and modern titles of 2015/2016. Rise of the tomb raider, quantum break, deus x and many more.
I didn't regret buying that monitor 18 months ago at a really high price but still nowadays couldn't handle that resolution. I found that adding a second gpu or going to titan x Pascal is dumb and a waste. So I was wondering 21:9 ultra wide curved or 2k 144hz? After 11 days of browsing, reading, watching YouTube videos and creating a ton of threads and every tech forum you can remember I decided to go 2k 144hz.

For me coming down to 2k from 4k was a visual downgrade on the first sight. Ips panel of the 2k monitor was far superior than my 4k TN panel. Smoothness won the game. The Smoothness I experience everyday using a 144hz monitor is unique and I am for no reason going back to 60hz again since it seems laggy, slow and unresponsive to me.
For you 2k will definitely be an upgrade since you used a lower resolution monitor.

Where the monitor really shine is fps and racing games.
Battlefield 4, cod bo3 and need for speed, mirror edge catalyst are amazingly smooth. Despite the fact my monitor doesn't have g-sync the gtx 1080 always give me 120+fps which make the games runs like never before.
Games I didn't noticed huge difference is quantum break, Mafia 3 with unlocked fps vs 60fps,deus x mankind divided, mad max.

As I said before I am not going back to 60hz. My next upgrade Wil be either 4k 120/144hz or 21:9 ultra wide curved 120/144hz since such a monitor doesn't exist atm. There are only 2 ultrawides with 100hz at a price range of 1000+euro which is ridiculous.

I have been were you are and I am reccomending you to try 144hz first before anything else. But ofc you need the power to deliver you so high fps at that resolution. My new monitor is the asus mg279q. There is also the Pg279q. They are exactly the same but the second has g-sync and it cost 220 euro more. For an option useless to my. The gtx1080 will never fail to deliver lower than 100fps at 2k.
