Question Gaming with chrome open causes my computer to SDD/HDD to crash, what do I do?

So basically whenever I play a game that uses alot of memory, if I open chrome or chrome is already open my computer will freeze up and crash. when I reload I'll be met with a S.M.A.R.T error that says status bad and replace, this is the only time it happens though. sometimes instead of just freezing I'll get a blue screen of death. I'm very confused to whats going on with my computer.

What are your system specs?

Typically when you start using up too much of your RAM, then things that would be in RAM will get saved to the HDD. If you are already using your HDD for other things, then you can encounter issues. Simply using up all of your RAM can cause your crashes too.

After giving your system specs and what games you are playing (and settings you are playing on) hopefully we can start to get somewhere in figuring out what the problem is.

Also, is this a problem that just started happening?

Everything pretty much.

CPU
RAM
Motherboard
GPU
HDD/SDD

Since it just started happening I would suggest the simple things such as disk defragment, disk cleanup, virus scan, malware scan, system updates, clearing browser history and cookies, etc.

I'll try a disk defragment and virus/malware scan, I don't have anything to clean up with disk clean up, and I used cc cleaner earlier to clear browser history, and I did a system update earlier as well.

Have you had the issues in any other games?
No I haven't since I don't play many other games, but I'm assuming it would happen since i tested if it would happen on dauntless too, when the issues first started happening on kurtzpel.

Reason why I ask about other games is sometimes you might just be one particular game having a bad error or programming that either needs patching or is having other issues at the time.

I got this when I went to defrag my risk, I'm not sure what any of it means.

Based on the results of defraggler the hard drive is fine. Defraggler uses SMART to tell the drive health. By using disk defragment I was referring to using the windows disk defrag that would move files around on the hard drive to make accessing them quicker. Doing this is especially important after large amounts of data were written and erased from a hard drive.

I see that you have three data drives listed in your response above. If that is correct, they should all have be done through defraggler and disk defrag. The hybrid drive that only has an rpm of 5400 is fairly slow compared to the SSD, so if you are running those games from it, I would suggest trying to run the games from the SSD to see if that is part of the issue. But regardless you should not be having problems based on the specs provided.

You will need to use a hardware monitor/temp monitor to keep an eye on your temps and CPU/RAM/GPU usage to see if you can pinpoint instances of abnormal usage while using those games.

Run a memtest86 too to make sure the RAM is fine.

And double check RAM frequency and timings are correct (as well your CPU and GPU are at the correct settings). Sometimes some sort of update or system error can mess up your BIOS settings like those for an XMP RAM profile and such.

Is there a driver update for your CPU or GPU?

Do you have any random programs running in the background?

Have you checked your idle temps?

Have you checked your idle CPU/GPU/RAM usage via task manager?

Based on everything said so far it really seems like your RAM is a single stick of 8 GB. I do honestly think that the RAM being a single module and you only having a total of 8 GB as being the primary cause. I have Chrome pulled up right now and it is already taking up almost 800 MB for two tabs...then of course other programs and the OS takes up a certain amount too. When gaming there could be quite a bit of more RAM taken up.

And of course there are programs and games that have memory leaks sometimes that require restarting the computer to stop.

If you have money for it I would suggest doubling the RAM to be 2 modules at 8 GB each (making sure that they are compatible with your current motherboard of course). I honestly think that that would be the best thing for the long term use of your system. But whether or not that would actually completely solve your issue is questionable without starting down the path I mentioned response I had posted above wanting to know your life story essentially.

Edit:
Some people have issues playing with the gtx1050 so you would likely need to turn down the settings to get better fps out of it. The GTX 970 is quite a bit more powerful than the GTX 1050 is. People are also reporting Dauntless having high RAM usage.
