I purchased a Gateway DX 4710-05 with a locked bios. I have read that individuals have had luck flashing the equivelent non-propriatary bios from the respective motherboard manufacturer. I believe that this motherboard is equivelent to Intels DG33BU but i wanted to know if anyone had a suggestion as to how to verify this.

Nope, G33M05G1 is a different motherboard than the Intel "Schroeder Town" G33M board used in numerous other Gateway models. I'm not certain but my hunch is that its a Foxconn OEM board. BIOS is completely different.

Not a good idea to flash the BIOS from a different board, at least until your warranty is over. Using the Intel BIOS would wipe-out the Gateway OEM pre-activation signature in the BIOS and will de-activate Windows. Attempting to activate online will fail. You would need to change the product key currently installed on the system to the product key on your COA. However, you still cannot activate online and will need to call Microsoft Activation Support in order to activate Windows. Its not as simple as flashing to a different BIOS and you're good to go.

Someone will need to edit the Gateway BIOS without breaking anything important. Sometimes you can find modded BIOS that someone already made available. I don't know of any particular source for that. There are quite a number of forums where modded BIOS can be found.

G33M05G1 is FOXCONN OEM. Clock generator is ICS9LPR502HGLF. It is like G33M-S.
But you can not edit this clock.Because "Truested Mode Enable (TME) strap status" is " no overclocking" setting for hardware.
(As a result of having analyzed it by useing Diagnosis )
If you want to over clock, try to change motherboard.

I was able to use a dell oem cd of vista basic to reinstall windows on a compaq pc. The backup cd's I created wouldn't work on the ecs board I installed, so I used my dell vista cd to reinstall vista. I was able to re-activate windows online with the original coa sticker number on the side of the compaq case. Those numbers are hard to read, even with a flashlight. Dell oem cd's for vista and xp are available online for around $17, last time I checked. Yeah, I think it's a total ripoff to force you to use another compaq motherboard just to use your vista license. The cost of the board doesn't justify it. I gave up my compaq warranty; I've changed out the motherboard, power supply, and added memory to the new board; the old board still works fine, but I wanted 4 dimm slots, and hp (which owns compaq) wouldn't sell me another hp board no matter what I paid them. They stated to me it's not their policy to sell geniune hp parts unless they install them. The cost was more than what I paid for the whole pc.

Hello,
I have the same issue. The BIOS on gateway dx4710 with G33M05G1 motherboard has locked out intel virtualization technology. Does anyone had any luck in upgrading/replacing the BIOS?

Thanks,
Sudhir
