GeForce 7950gt - better than X1950Pro??

hey guys, if i'm playing games like oblivion at about 1024x, which of these two cards is better, the 7950gt, or the X1950Pro?

They both perform identicaly (in Oblivion, 1024 x 768) actually. When you crank up the resolution to 1600 x 1200, the 1950pro shows a slight lead, but the FPS is so slow, you wont be playing it at that resolution anyway.

The 7950GT is is the better card of the two, it will almost always outperform the 1950pro, except in this case.

When I made this choice however, I went with a third option, the 1950XT 256MB. My sapphire 1950XT 256MB was slightly cheaper than the 7950GT, slightly more than the 1950pro, and outperforms both in 99% of benchmarks. In some cases, it significantly outperforms the 7950GT for less. If you want to approximate the framerates for the 1950XT 256, it always performs very close to the 1900XT 512. For some reason, having less memory than the 1900XT is irrelevant in benchmarks, even at 1900 x 1600. Ask someone smarter than me why that is.

I would say, however, that an EVGA 7950GT Ko (stock overclocked) is a pretty good solution.

The 7950GT is better indoors while the X1950Pro is better outdoors which is what matters. But the frame rates are pretty slow for either card in outdoor mode which is what matters.

I'd wait another month to see what DAMMIT brings to the table as far as DX10 cards are concerned. This might bring the 8800GTS down to $300 levels.

Btw, what CPU do you have? This by itself might limit what video card you should get.

At least he didn't combine two companies. He could have said AMD pentium X2 4800 D or something to that effect. Anyway, as stated before, each card performs better in different situations. I agree with mpjesse, if you have the money get an 8800.

You should check ebay. Some people try to sell those old Pentium Ds by calling them Intel Duo Core.

Well , the 7950GT will outperform the X1950 Pro (specially with the OC it can sustain) .. but for that investment , do get a X1950XT ...

If you had a Core 2 Duo I'd agree with mpjesse and tell you to bite the bullet and get an 8800 or wait for DAAMIT to strike back with their 720M transistor monster R600, but my single core A64 3700 will spank that dual-core Pentium 4's arse of yours beet red for gaming performance. Get an ATi card as they're less CPU dependent in their drivers than those crazy nVidians. Your computer's gaming performance will only as fast as it's weakest link permits it to - in your case - your CPU.

Think smarter not harder.

Not necessarily. ATI's drivers use Catalyst AI, which can increase video card optimization based on increased CPU usage. Turning AI off will use fewer CPU cycles, yes, but even then.

And I highly doubt nVidia's drivers use much more CPU power, if any, than ATI's. Can you give a link that proves it?

And if you plan on using Linux, nVidia's drivers are much, much better. Any distro of Linux I've tried installing the drivers for my X1900XT on has detected that my card is 256MB. It is a 512MB card. People say ATI's drivers are better than they were a while ago, even under Linux......but I don't see how much worse it could have been if it's detecting only half my VRAM.

Also consider your power supply. ATI's X-series DX9 cards use more power than a comparable GeForce DX9 card.

Also, why do you play at 1024 x 768? If you have either one of the cards you're looking at, why hold yourself to that resolution? My X1900XT drives Oblivion at 1680 x 1050, and it's a little slower than either of those cards. Maybe instead of a new video card you should get a new monitor.
