So I am seeing that a lot of people are stating that there cards are running at a lower temperature than 50C during an idle state. My card is running at 60-63C while being idle, and I haven't tested the temp while the card was running while playing a game or editing in photoshop or premiere pro.

I have the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 - 4GB - EVGA Superclocked

I did see that some people said this being a higher powered card, would not only consume more wattage, but it would run at a higher temperature.

Using after burner I changed the fan to run at 20% when at 40C. My temps dropped to a 40C while being idle, or just using basic applications like google chrome and HW monitor.

The only thing I was concerned about, was changing the fan to run at these temps. Is it going to hurt the fan, and or graphics card?

Solution

My 960 idles at 59-60 due to the "silent" fans not spinning mode, you can set up a custom fan curve using afterburner and you'll be good to go 😀 And no, unless your fans run at 100% all the time, you're good.
While looking at the CPU, playing Metro Last Light. Core - 5 are all within 45C. Right now with After Burner running, the 960 is 43C while tabbed out. Unsure of my room temp to be exact. House is set to 76F 24.4C. I would say my room feels about 75 with my ceiling fan and portable fan.

Okay, so I am not the only one that idles around 50-63C. Okay, well last question then. Would it be better to continue using after burner to keep the graphics card cooler than letting the card idle at that high of a temperature?

It doesn't really make much of a difference, but if you decide to overclock your card, or maybe just have it cool all the time, i'd suggest a custom fan curve, yeah. But if you don't want the fans making noise all the time, even though they're not really loud, go with the stock fan curve. Cheers m8

Ah i see, also later realized my gpu was somehow at high perf in the control panel rather than adaptive, derp, OP should give that a check too 😛
