GeForce2 MX and Linux

I need a Linux distro that has a new enough version of Nvidia drivers and XFree86 4 that it supports my GeForce2 MX.

I've installed Mandrake 7.1 and Red Hat 7, and neither of them do, so I can't run Gnome or KDE.

I need one that I can install it off the net from a floppy disk. My cd copier went out, so I can't install it from an ISO.

Is Red Hat the only distro that still offers a way to install Linux over the net?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Check out nvidia, they make commerical drivers for Linux. Im using a TNT2 right now on Mandrake 7.2 XFree4.0.1. Nvidia's drivers are also hardware accelerated which is better for games and video (I play Quake 3 ). Getting back to your question, no there is no distro of linux that supports your GeforceMX. But,... it is supported in Xfree86 CVS (development), so the next release of Xfree86 will almost certainly have support for you card.

having the same problem here. I read on a newsgroup that mandrake7.2 works fine with the gf2mx card (then again, I fell for that one yesterday when someone said red hat 7 worked hehe). I'm downloading mandrake as we speak, and will let you know if it works before you waste your time trying.

I just installed an FTP install of Mandrake 7.2 and KDE 2.0. My USB Logitech mouse works. My SBLive! works. I installed XFree86 4 and KDE loads up. I installed Quake3 and patched it with 1.17. When I try and run Q3, it says it couldn't find something related to OpenGL or XFree or something.

I'm stuck and I don't know what to do to get this to work.

Any help would be greatly appericiated.

Thanks

Did you install the commercial drivers? If not quake wont work. The open drivers do not have hardware acceleration yet so there can be no quake.

Fairly certain that XFree86 v. 4.0.1 plus nVidia's latest driver for Linux will let you use a GF2 MX.

I have got a system A7V, Duron 700 and GeForce MX running SuSE. Initially there appeared to be no way of getting it to go but in the end it was very simple ... after SuSE support send me the solution I noticed that I only missed out on one step :)
They actually have working rpm´s of the drivers on their ftp server (update section!) and everything works fine now.
To answer to your second question, probably every dist allows you to install it via ftp with the exception of Corel, presumably. Anyway, if you go for SuSE it will be easy to get your MX running.

Cheers,
Andreas
