So, I had to RMA my brand new PSU because the 12v rail was failing, and since I need a PC to work I just plugged a generic 450W PSU I had, and in bios deactivated all cores but 1, hyperthreading, just connected 1 HDD and 3 fans, 2 case 1 cpu, and 12gb of ram... It's safe to do this ? the voltages monitor look just fine, they are 12.2v 3.4v 5.1v and core 1.1

Also the motherboard has 8 pin 12v, the PSU has only the 4pin one so I just connected that...

What do you guys think ? should I wait the replaced PSU or I'm safe with this one not pushing it too much?

Solution
If your generic 450 Watt PSU has a combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 18 Amps or greater you shouldn't need to deactivate any cores if your i7-2600K is running at the stock 3.4 GHZ.

Even at 100% CPU load the i7-2600K@3.4GHz should only be drawing 86 Watts (7.2 Amps) from the +12V rails.
I wouldn't use it for an extended period of time in this config, but if it's running stable and you need it to work, then do it. I would make sure to monitor voltages. Be sensitive to any stability issues, freezing, or reboots...they will be your first indicators that something isn't right and you should consider waiting for the new PSU.

the most important is, do you have a graphics card

any generic psu can support any stock clocked cpu/ram/board/hdd, once you have 250 or more watts, i would say you are fine, right now im running my q9450 and a 4650 off a generic 350 watt from 2004...100% stable

Gerneric = usually crap and unreliable / inefficient.

Worst case scenario it last for 12 months of more and then goes bang and possibly takes your otrher hardware with it.

How long are they estimating the return of your other PSU ?

well, they will refund me within 2 to 3 days, but it will take at least 2 to 3 weeks to deliver a new one, since it's international shipping and it must pass customs, so in the worst of the cases 1 month 1 week :/ for a new psu

I have no graphics card yet, i was only using it for simple tasks and just things I can do in a pentium 1 for now....

sadly, buying here is 4 times more expensive than buying in amazon including customs and shipping and even me having to pay the return shipping, I just want to be sure they will refund me and then buy the psu from them again...

Thanks for the all the answers i dont know who should i give the best answer! every bit helped

+1

also don't even think of 'trying' a GPU, not even 'just for a little bit'
