I am trying to recover files from an old WD Caviar 26400 hard drive using a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. It connects just fine - I see the HD appear in my file manager with a 'E:' designation. I can also see the files in the device, but when I try to access them or copy them I get the I/O error.

Any ideas how to overcome this? I figure the device isn't damaged since it connects fine and shows the files.

IDE drives have settings for Auto, Primary and as Secondary drive, try them all.
There are also 34 and 40 wire connectors so adapter may not be same...
