[SOLVED] Getting blue screen "PC ran into a problem" on Windows 10 more often now, (HDMI port dead)

Hi All,

I am not sure where to post this, I have a Asus Prime Z270-A desktop that's about 3 years old, and as of late, I am getting the Windows 10 'blue screen PC ran into a problem' more often than not. I notice it occurring when I transfer too much files between my phone and PC, or when I am watching media player on one screen and have a trading platform open in another, or while downloading. Often times, it happens back to back after a reboot of itself. To say the least, it will pop up at least "once" a day, if not more.

I don't know if this is related to the display driver or bad memory? I did a disk drive scan for errors in Windows, but didn't find anything. I don't have a graphics card and use on-board. A few months ago, my HDMI port couldn't detect, so I got one of those DVI to HDMI adapter thing in the other port. I don't know if this is a sign of the board itself going bad or the display having issues.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB
Main: SSD 850 EVO
Slave: Western Digital HDD

Can someone suggest what might be going on? Should I just go ahead and replace the Mobo, or replace the memory, or is the SSD going bad? I thought these things last long? I would like to reuse everything where possible.

For the time being, I am backing up all my files into a portable HD.

Thanks.

Solution
Getting BSOD During install is telling us its hardware, not software, causing the errors. As usual I have concentrated on software but it seems pretty clear

Try running memtest86 on each of your ram sticks, one stick at a time, up to 4 passes. Only error count you want is 0, any higher could be cause of the BSOD. Remove/replace ram sticks with errors. Memtest is created as a bootable USB so that you don’t need windows to run it

if ram is bad, it can make perfectly good drivers look bad. We been chasing something like that. Ram is a common reason for BSOD during install.

Main: SSD 850 EVO
Slave: Western Digital HDD

You don't have slave drives anymore, they stopped that when we swapped to sata 15 years ago, thats...
Can you follow option one on the following link - here - and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD - that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD

copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a file sharing web site, and share the link in your thread so we can help fix the problem

Thank you very much for your help.
Just included a few DMP from this morning! uggh.

I did Windows Recovery and same issue.
I suspect it to be a hardware issue, and told me to run Asus Diagnostic, but I don't think it's available, have e-mailed them.

What hard-ware issue could this be? Thanks

I have sent a copy of this link to a friend, alas I didn't see your reply here until just an hour or so ago so, and he lives in US and is likely asleep now.
I cannot say without knowing what errors you are getting. If its a BSOD, there are over 300 different codes and although I mostly only see about 10 or so, I still can't guess which you have

what are the other parts in PC?

Thank you so very much. This has plagued me for months! I don't run a graphics card, nor anything much. But let me know what else you might need. I can re-run some more dumps if needed. I did a Windows Recovery and am still getting the blue screen. The blue screens are fast and sometimes I can't even see the message in time.

CPU: i7-7700K
PSU: Corsair CX750M
Display Driver: Intel HD Graphics 630 (Onboard)
Wireless: ASUS PCE-AC88 802.11ac Network Adapater

Have you tried latest drivers for Intel GPU? - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/98909/Intel-HD-Graphics-630 - these are way newer than the ones on Asus website.

updating bios might help but i want to see what BSOD you getting first. and dumps will show what bios you have now.

My recollection seems to make me feel like the Asus stock drivers were okay. The only time I even bothered to look for drivers was when the HDMI port suddenly stopped working one day (a few months back). That's when I started looking to update the onboard drivers, thinking there might be a fix. I think from then on, that's when the blue screen started. It seemed to have gotten a lot worst in the past few months, like various reboots in a day!

I'll await a bit before I mess things up. I feel it could be related to my display, only because the HDMI port crapped out.

Thank you very much again.

Hi, I ran the dump files through the debugger and got the following information: https://shelterlesstooth.htmlpasta.com/

File information:041320-12671-01.dmp (Apr 13 2020 - 10:00:21)
Bugcheck:IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (A)
Probably caused by:ntkrnlmp.exe (Process: Corsair.Servic)
Uptime:0 Day(s), 0 Hour(s), 21 Min(s), and 14 Sec(s)

File information:041220-10281-01.dmp (Apr 12 2020 - 17:32:28)
Bugcheck:DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (D1)
Probably caused by:memory_corruption (Process: smss.exe)
Uptime:0 Day(s), 0 Hour(s), 00 Min(s), and 03 Sec(s)

Possible Motherboard page: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-Z270-A/
You have BIOS version 1009 installed. The latest is 1302. Wait for additional information before deciding to update or not. Important: Verify that I have linked to the correct motherboard. Updating your BIOS can be risky. Never try it when you might lose power (lightning storms, recent power outages, etc).

This information can be used by others to help you. I can't help you with this. Someone else will post with more information. Please wait for additional answers. Good luck.

Thanks, that is the correct MOBO. However, I am not sure how to update the BIOS either.

Is memory corruption a sign that my Corsair Vengeance is going bad? I ran Window's memory checker today and it didn't find any issues with the memory.

Still, thank you very much for your help.

it looks more likely to be a driver
Do you have newest version of Icue installed? https://www.corsair.com/us/en/downloads

I never had Icue before and it was running fine.

The only time I bothered updating the driver was when the HDMI port in the rear went bad one day. Because it went bad, I thought I needed to update driver, but it was toasted. I ended up getting a DVI=HDMI adapter. So I think it could be hardware related? Never heard a port going bad, especially if it just stays plugged in. lol

Instead of rebooting 6-9 times a day, I am getting 2-3 times a day after the Windows 10 recovery / reinstall, not full reformat.

Should I go ahead and update the VGA onboard driver from Asus' site again?

Thanks

I don't think its VGA drivers, neither looks like VGA drivers.

one of the crashes mentions Icue but as the victim, not as cause.

other one happened when system restore was running, I can see all hard drive actions. Now if I ignore Norton drivers, and the VPN driver,
there were only 2 drivers running
Sep 13 2016iaStorA.sysIntel SATA Storage Device RAID Controller

and an Asus driver that is unlikely to do anything with a storage drive
The intel driver is part of this - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...l-RST-User-Interface-and-Driver?product=55005 (Don't download the optane version)

It may have mentioned Icue, because I picked up a Corsair Mouse a while ago and did install that program. Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you. I previously didn't use Icue.

So the SetupRST.exe?

I thought that updating the chipsets from ASUS would be more compatible than going to INTEL directly? Can you please confirm and I'll try install that?

Thanks so much again.

its a matter of age, the Asus version of IRST is dated 26 Dec 2017 - https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-Z270-A/HelpDesk_Download/

The intel version of IRST is from this year.
Asus made motherboard but Intel made the chips. Both of them are Intel drivers, Asus might have changed a few labels./ version numbers... they do that all the time with Realtek drivers.

Its up to you, the ones on Asus site still newer than what you have now.

Let me try this during the weekend, incase something happens. I'll try the Asus one and see how it goes, and then Intel.

Thank you for your help. I sincerely appreciate the help and I am so grateful to find some guidance with this.

Hi,

I've tried the Asus IRST driver and it crashed again. Thereafter, I went to the Intel driver and it might've had the blue screen on a self-restart reboot. I thought, oh no, not again! However, after much testing, it seems to be fine.

Since the INtel Driver I've had 0 crashes. I am able to put my CPU on sleep on / off and continue from where I've left off. I've put the computer in heavy load, by opening programs, watching vids, xyz xyz like transferring multiple files from computer to phone. In the past, it would crash under load.

I believe this issue has resolved itself and I greatly appreciate the time, patience, and relentless help.

Thank you @Colif & @gardenman and this forum!

I may have spoke too soon, just encountered a few blue screens again. Not sure what happened. Everything was going pretty well. I did not install anything new, or whatever.
Should I do another mini-dump file?
