Hi everyone,

I've got an MSI 1070 GPU, had it for around 5 years but it's starting to die sadly. Constantly getting out of video memory errors, graphic issues, all my tabs and games crashing around 2-3 times a day.

I'm looking at upgrading to a 4070. Normally I tend to go with MSI, always have done, but I've seen some good reviews about Gigabye and they're currently on sale on Amazon:

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 GAMING OC - £494 (25% off)
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 WINDFORCE OC - £546 (5% off)

Been looking at reviews. Apparently they are quite similar, the gaming supposed to be quieter and better cooling though. Although it's been 5 years since I last upgraded my PC, so I'm out of the loop in terms of hardware. Eventually I hope to purchase a water block for my GPU instead of the default fan as my current setup has a waterloop through the CPU and GPU.

Here's my current specs:

Gonna have some bottlenecking, but at this stage, upgrading is kind of a must, since my hardware is dying.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which one may be better, or if it's even worth buying at all? Or a suggestion for a different brand / model all together? With the super versions out, would the OC ones drop in price in the near future, or possibly wait for a better sale? It's annoying as hell my PC tabs and games crashing every day, but if I can hold out until a great deal comes along, it might be worth it. Cheers

Between those two I'd go with the 4070 GAMING OC. They're both the same card underneath so get the one that's cheaper. You say it has a better cooler as well so it's a no brainer really. Sorry I don't want to google it to confirm lmao.

There's also a 7800 XT on sale for ten pounds less than the first card you mentioned which would be my choice as performance seems similar between the two although it comes with 4GB more VRAM than the 4070.

Take the Windforce or Eagle if it's available. The price difference is not much.
As for noise, it depends on the case but also on how hard the GPU has to work. You will certainly hear it when playing a demanding game, but whether it gets unacceptably noisy is subjective.

If you're looking for a long term upgrade, see if you can swing an 4080. But if you don't play games that NEED that much performance, you'll be throwing money away. The 4070 Ti Super is another card to consider.

About your crashing troubles, create a topic here if you haven't already. Maybe someone can help.

If you are considering a full upgrade of your ageing PC, then try to wait until you see what intel comes up with for the next gen CPUs. If the LGA 1700 socket is finished, it would not make sense to invest in it unless you build a long term PC that will outlast the new generation. It's doable, and may be better value than building a new PC later this year or next when the new motherboards come out.

Of course, you can go AMD and take advantage of their currect socket which will not be replaced so soon. Even if you don't go with an AMD CPU, consider their GPUs.
Nvidia's 40xx lineup is not great value, unfortunately. Only the modest 4060 and the crazy powerful 4090 are woth the money. Everything in between is too cut down for the price. Except maybe the 4070 Ti Super?
AMD has better options.

Cheers for the suggestion, I don't play too many resource intensive games. My 1070 is 5 years old and I can still play the majority of games on high settings. Plus the 4080 is double the price of the 4070.

I did make a post regarding my memory issues:

Sadly didn't get a resolution. I tested every single piece of hardware, RAM, virtual memory, SSD, GPU hardware, virus scan, virtual page size, couldn't find issue. Which is a shame because I'd rather not have to spend £500 since my 1070 has been perfectly fine.

Yes, i thought i remembered your nick from some troubleshooting thread. It is a shame, like you said.

And i also agree that 4080 is very expensive. 4070 is unfortunately also a little bit more costly than it is worth. 4070 Ti Super is kinda worth the money.

You could take a chance on a 4060. It is modest in power but still capable and unlike every other 40xx card, it will not leave you broke. I have seen a ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 4060 8GB Twin Edge OC for relatively little money. And i personally own a Gigabyte Eagle 4060 OC.
It's ...ok. I wouldn't recommend it but only because it is just not a powerful GPU. For those of us who could get by even with intel's on board graphics, the 4060 is actually more than powerfull enough. But most gamers would skip right over to any 4070 or above. :)

Don't see the point to pay 50 more for very similar tier models.

I have the Windforce version. Nothing special on it to justify any cent more.
