Both of them are great cards at 1080p. the GTX 970 beats the R9 290X at 1080p. the real difference is at 4K . the GTX 970 beats some times at 4K ( Despite the V ram issue ). the R9 290X beats some times at 4k . the GTX 970 beats at 4k on games which optimized for Nvidia like : ACU ,Watch dogs and ................. . the R9 290X beats at 4k on games which optimized for AMD like : BF4 , ( Never settle forever ) games and ......... .
WARNING : the GTX 970 don't have an ordinary 4 GB memory ( 256-bit). it has a 3.5 GB and a slower 0.5 memory ( slower bandwidth ) , SO theoretical the R9 290X ( with 4 GB 512-bit ) beats at 4k , byt at real life they are equal at 4k. look at the benchmarks ...
