Gigabyte R9 280x windforce 3x low fps in games, please help

i recently bourght a Gigabyte R9 280x windforce 3x GPU hoping it would make my gaming experience better. but i've run into some problems. when i run the games (BF4, Arma 3) the FPS i should have according to several review etc. is alot lower on my rig. sometimes unplayable. in Battlefield 4 i should get around 60 fps according to reviews etc. but i only get like 30-40. is this possibly bottlenecking, or is my rig just bad ?

my rig.

- AMD Phenom II X6 1055t 2.8GHz
- 8Gb Kingston Hyperx 1600Mhz
- Gigabyte R9 280x 3Gb DDR5
- Windows 7 64-bit

I hate to do this to you but the other two posts are correct you have a definite cpu bottleneck. If you feel comfortable with it you can overclock. The phenom X6 was a very respectable gaming processor when it came out however that was about 3-4 years ago now, and back then gamers were pushing it at near 4.0ghz. At that time the phenom x6 was just barely able to keep up with 5870s which were the top of the line GPU. you figure that the 280x is about 40% faster than the 5870s were and there is your bottleneck. Depending on your motherboard you might be able to upgrade to the new AMD processors and the fx8350 is a great starting point. If you decide to try any of my suggestions as a start let me know how it works out.

I would get a new processor. The FX-8320 or 8350 would be a good match if you want to go AMD and and i5 would be good for intel

i already overclocked my cpu to 3.3Ghz. and it is stable i did ths by only setting the HT frequency to 230 i believe with a 14x multiplier. i didnt put up the voltage. but if i put it higher than 3.3Ghz my screen freezes. does yhis mean i have to up the voltage on the cpu ? and btw my motherboard has the AM3 socket, so upgrading the cpu would only be the last way out if my cpu dies during overclocking.

ok usually you can increase voltage slightly if you run into instability but you also need some serious cooling once you start playing with voltages. If you want to try overclockobg higher there is a whole thread on here about that that I would recommend you check out. but for now make sure your drivers are up to date and consider a new CPU in the mean time if you want to try over clocking go for it from were you are 4.0 is about a 20% gain which usually for phenoms gets you about a 20-25% gain in gaming if remember correctly.
