Hello,
i hope someone can help me with my issue because it is slowly driving me nuts...

I build my first PC last year and had many troubles with getting a replacement for my defective motherboard.
After 3 months i finally got a new motherboard. It is a Gigabyte X399 Designare EX.

My components are now as followed:
  • Gigabyte X399 Designare EX
  • Threadripper 1900x
  • GTX 1080
  • 64GB G. Skill RAM at 3000mHz
  • 500 GB Toshiba NVME SSD
  • 500 GB WD Black NVME SSD
  • 2x 120 GB Sandisk Sata SSD
  • Corsair 850i power supply
  • Windows 10 Pro
This board works great in most cases but I am not able to boot into the BIOS after the PC was started once.
At the first boot the BIOS Flash screen appears and I can press "Del" to get into the BIOS BUT this
is only possible when the PC was turned off for more than approximately 30 minutes.
If I press the "Del" button when I reboot while not waiting 30 minutes or more the computer does not boot at all.
This is problematic because I want to dual boot Windows and Manjaro.

I googled around and found people talking about such phenomena when Windows fast startup is enabled.
But this is disabled for my PC because I had trouble with fast startup and wake on LAN working together.

I am pretty much clueless why this is happening and would be very grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction.

Thank you for your time and effort,
Dario

  1. Click the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Update and Security.
  3. Click Recovery.
  4. Under Advanced startup, click Restart now. ...
  5. Select Troubleshoot.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select UEFI Firmware Settings.
  8. Click Restart to restart the system and enter UEFI (BIOS).

Hello Calvin,
thank you for your reply!
I am trying to solve this issue for weeks by now therefor I forgot to say that I
tried this already.
It happens the same when trying to reboot while pressing "Del".
The PC does not boot at all.
But when I try this the Debug code shows "Ab" which should mean that I am in UEFI setup.
So why do I not get any video output?

I have found a solution which is not perfect by any means but seems to be working for me.
So for the case that somebody else is encountering the same problem I will write what helped me.

For my idea I explained in this thread (https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/kvm-qemu-on-a-shell-only-linux-install.3492731/) I bought a rx 560.
I replaced my GTX 1080 in Pcie slot 1 with this card then the PC does not wanted to boot at all.
Therefore I booted a life Linux from USB and this solved somehow the booting problem and the BIOS problem.
Now I am able to get into the BIOS with the procedure explained by @Calvin7.

So the solution for my PC was to buy another GPU.

Maybe this will help somebody else save some time.
