This is my problem with android, the lack of updates from the manufacturers. It just aggravates me that these manufacturers release a device, and then proceed to never support it.
Even still though, there're phones just getting released with Gingerbread...why?
At least my ole TF101 is still getting updates, thank you Asus.

Title is wrong... Android 2.3 is not the most popular, its just most the largest market share or most used.

1- Google never made 3.x for phones, it was for tablets only... hence a bit of a delay in phone OS development.

2 - The issues between Phonemakersphone companies makes upgrades a bit tricky... But the blame still goes to ALL 3 (example): Google>Samsung>at&t. And since its been about 2 years since Android 2.1~2.3, our phones are just now ending their lifespan and contracts.

In the past 4 weeks, Myself and 5 other friends/etc have upgraded our 2 year-old phones. Those on WP7 have gone to ICS as well as us 2.x users going to 4.0/4.1. Watch 2.3 lose 5~7% market share a month as those devices are recycled/retired. Since my Galaxy S1 still works (mostly) - Its been turned into a mini-WIFI tablet/camera for the kid. In 6 months, it should look a lot better for 4.x. Of course WP8 will starting eating its 1% share.

3 - if Android 4.X was available for anyone, more people would be on it by now. Apple only makes a few kinds of phones, with 1~2 models a year... easy for them to upgrade the OS. Unlike Android with about 30~40 phones a year.

4 - Until recently with today's new 1280x720 display phones with 4.0, there wasn't much reason to upgrade.

[citation][nom]JOSHSKORN[/nom]Am I the only one that hates ICS? The on-screen tap bars are too damn narrow.[/citation]
Yes, you are the only one. Perhaps your fingers are just...well....

I am still useing 2.3.7 on my Optimus One, I tried 4.0.3/4.0.4 but my phone will not run it properly. So back to GB, but then again my phone cost me just over 100$ and does what I need it to, phone / text / im and mail with the occasional browsing. The GPS on it works as good as on the more expensive models, also I won't feel as bad when I lose it or gets stolen

Funny part is that Android is 68% of the market. iOS is 16%. So, there are about the same Android 4.0+ devices out there than the TOTAL amount of all iOS devices.

...and there's 9-gazillion different Android handsets from 20+ OEMs, while there's 5 iPhones from 1 OEM. Not rooting for the fruit here but let's keep it authentic

I just don't want to have to root my tablet to get Jelly Bean, but at least I have the next step down from it for now ICS.

I'm not sure if Acer will update the Iconia A500 to Jelly Bean or not, but I'm guessing not though hopefully they will especially given the fact it was the first android device to be rooted for Jelly Bean.

[citation][nom]xpeh[/nom]Yeah, maybe if the older devices supported 4.0, there'd be a much higher percantage.[/citation]

I have a Droid X, which shipped with Froyo and has a single core CPU, I flashed it with ICS and it runs better than with Gingerbread.

Go figure.

This fragmentation of android is a problem. My phone doesn't run very well sometimes (locks up, freezes) and support was cut off mere months after release (if there was any support ever). Going with Windows Phone as soon as my contract ends. Android may be open but it's crap

[citation][nom]jamoise[/nom]Its cause android phones keep working fine and don't really "need" the updates to keep working fine I had 2.2, then upgraded to 2.3 then 4.1. looks a bit fancier but I don't do anything more or less with it that i could do with 2.2 or 2.3 and all versions seem stable to me.[/citation]
Ditto.

I have a Galaxy S2 with GB. My friend has a Galaxy S3 with ICS. Looks a little fluffier, whoopty f'in doo. Nothing about it makes me want it. I'm happy with and will continue to use GB for as long as I am able.

Blame your carrier, not the is or simply unlockit and install an international rom on it, tho u ppl in the us have some funky phones that are awailable just to 1 carrier.
And many old phones do not have enough resources to run ICS, my phone doesn't have drivers and codecs for ICS.

A realist...great. ...just what we need.

For all of you folks who complain about your carrier not pushing updates...just root your phone. I got sick of waiting on Verizon to push updates to my Thunderbolt that I have had for 2 years, so just rooted it and now im running ICS.

I guess what im saying is...instead of complaining, why dont you do something about it?

[citation][nom]wildkitten[/nom]I think the title should be changed from Most Popular to Most Used as the word popular implies it would be the most wanted. ... If I had my choice, I would not be on GB.[/citation]
Ditto.
