Most foundries lost share amid the downturn, according to IC Insights Inc.'s rankings for the top 17 foundries in terms of sales in 2009.

GlobalFoundries Inc. entered the rankings picture at the No. 5 spot while IDM foundries, namely IBM, Samsung and Texas Instruments, lagged the field.

The pure-play vendors in Taiwan led the field. "TSMC's sales in 2009 were more than 3x that of UMC, which in turn had more than the combined foundry sales of Chartered and SMIC in 2009," according to IC Insights.

"In 2007, SMIC moved past Chartered in sales and took over third place. However, with SMIC's exit from the DRAM foundry business in 2008, coupled with Chartered's acquisition of the Hitachi fab in Singapore, Chartered once again seized the third place ranking from SMIC in 2008. In 2009, Chartered's sales were 43 percent greater than fourth-ranked SMIC," according to the report.

"AMD spin-off GlobalFoundries acquired Chartered in 4Q09 and combined, would have had sales of just over $1.6 billion in 2009," according to the report. "The combined sales of Chartered and GlobalFoundries would have been just over $2.6 billion in 2009, enough to put the combined company's sales only 8 percent behind second-ranked UMC."

In 2008, the new silicon foundry spinoff from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. opened for business, disclosed its corporate name and unveiled its strategy. GlobalFoundries is a joint venture between AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi. Under the current plan, AMD owns a 34.2 percent stake of the foundry venture, while ATIC will own the remaining shares.

Kind of reminds me of Bobby Brady saying how his best ever result in any contest of an athletic endeavour was finishing 4th in a swimming race.

He of course went on to add that there were only 4 competitors in the race.

Splendid
Q) Do those figures include any business from ARM, STM or Qualcomm?

A) No.

Now imagine they did, just like they will this year and next. UMC is already like a rabbit in the headlights, they must be praying GF buy them out soon.

TSMC were finished at 55nm. The only reason they made money at all with their awful 40nm was because of having no competition.

GF will be first to 28nm and it will be a superior process to TSMC's, forcing Nvidia to switch or capitulate vs ATI.

The short story is, every single one of those foundries is terrified of GF, and for good reason.

all the armor and swords? maybe GF will start sieges on smaller foundries or they will get beat up by the engineers?

I think jenny has played too many RPG's and her world view is that everyone is out to defeat the dragons and monsters and its all about war death and destruction.

Huh?

How does coming 4th of 4 relate to coming 5th out of 17 in your first year of existence?

Would be interesting to know if it really is just AMD's revenues on that GF total, or maybe some STM stuff there too.

$1.1bn worth of wafers, make that $1.4bn for an entire year. That seems awfully high to be just coming from AMD.

Ooops, I blew it. The link I supplied is a list of suppliers, not foundries like the OP.

Problem being after about 10 min of dedicated googling, I cant come up with a 2008 equivalent of this list? WTF?

EDIT: Heh, Wiki to the rescue. I just learned how the foundry 'model' works, and what the various definitions mean. We would have to do a breakdown of AMD's financial reports to get an equivalent $$.

Well, nearly unlimited petro dollars looking for a way to replace the inevitable demise of oil, GF isnt afraid to spend money, even now, and THAT has to scare at least most of them.

Heheh, yea, Jenny's comment about $1.1Bil being 'alot' and AMD showing over $6Bil for 2008 screamed 'WRONG!' to me.
