Try out some platforming games like Sonic Generations, Super Meat Boy, Trine 2, Braid and so on. Maybe try some racing games like Shift 2, Sonic Racing, or Dirt 2 and 3. Try some point and click adventures like the Monkey Island games or Sam & Max. Maybe even check out LA Noir, or a turn-based strategy game like Frozen Synapse.

The DoTA genre is really taking off with League of Legends, DoTA 2, and Smite if you're into that. Similar to those is SC2, which has an expansion coming in March 2013

Based on the OP, he pretty much wants the opposite of that though.

gratuituous space battles. got it over the weekend and it's very much about tactical thinking and arranging your units predictively, then letting them go. You draw up the battle plans then sit back and watch the battle unfold.

little Inferno is a casual indie game based around throwing things into a fireplace - but they are all inanimate objects, so no violence per se.

there's Always Tower defense too - Plants vs zombies is good - it is all about defending against (by way of killing) zombies, but its all very cartoonish.

The walking Dead point and click game is mostly story/choice driven - occasional shooting scenes, but they require almost no skill, and its zombies, not people.

Also, back to the future, Sam and Max and Strongbad telltale episodic games are good choices if you enjoy point and click and/or any of these franchises.

Deus Ex series gives you the option to not kill a single enemy, via use of stealth and tranquilisers.

That's all i can think of for now.

OpenTTD. An open source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, it's about managing a transportation company. Also, it's free :)

Probably already suggested, but Minecraft is a great family game and trust me, it will get you addicted and you'll spend hours and hours playing the game, then, if you ever get bored with it (not likely), the community has many intricate and amazing mods, some of which completly change the entire game, and all of them add much much more content to the game. Not to mention that the game is still being updated, and much more is being added to it. Oh, and there's multiplayer, which brings even more gamemodes that will get you addicted, like MineZ, or Hunger Games, etc.

Sim city 4, Sims 3, minecraft, guilds2:R, civ 5, Industry giant, and Mario. Well Mario is pretty graphic with the head stomping and stuff. Kind of reminds me of American History X and the Holocaust movies.

You can play Deus ex human revolution almost in its entirity and not fight or kill anyone....(except for the dumb boss fights, only poor part of this game imo). Or you can play it by not killing anyone, just knocking them out, or avoid them altogether. Its free roaming within the cities, has xp and levels/perks, side missions and has multiple ways of completing missions: stealth, knockouts, complete avoidance or full on guns blazing. some good hacking puzzles as well Good story and characters as well.

Games like Dirt 3 should do the job :)

But theres nothing like Conkers Bad Fur Day. Not much shooting (except in ww2 section) and storyline is quite long. Its also funny but you need to be quite skilled cuz its very hard.
