Project64

I extremely recommend Oblivion as although the main story lines do involve a lot of violence they only take up a small percentage of the total experience. Download some recommended mods such as realism and I guarantee you will be blown away.

In Oblivion there is always the option to run around hack n' slashin everybody. The combat has much variety. you can use an assortment of weapons from bows, blunt weapons, slashing weapons, large sheilds, poison weapons, or use magic, or you can use chameleon magic to sneak by some enemies completely.

There is violence in the game, no lie. How much of it is really up to you.

I could only play that game 10 minutes at a time. You're against something that cannot be killed and you only have a lamp with limited oil and limited tinderboxes. Hands down, this game bitch slaps ALL the supposedly horror games I've played.

I see a few people saying " It sucked, I didnt get scared!" but i think thats means exploring the castle and trying to solve the story and such was out of their range of fun and they would rather barrel down the hallway with a shotgun blowing zombies away... oh what have you done to horror games capcom?

YOU LEAVE CAPCOM OUT OF THIS.

ID was doing that to the "horror" game genre long before anyways.

My biggest horror game is civ V

OH GOD HE'S GOT INFANTRY FUUUU-

Just like to add one more non violent game. Fahrenheit: The Indigo Prophecy. It's an old game but is worth the time. At least for me.

I played Indigo Prophecy up to the point with the bit in the office and you had to press the keys in order, i died like 10 times in a row and just never played it again.

It was an interesting, but flawed, game.

1)Amnesia
2)Civ 5 (gets boring for me though since I always play conquer the world, wife likes it when she plays to goals)
3)Angry Birds! fun for the whole freaking family!!
4)X3 or even Free Lancer (a little old and simple but you can finish the game and sand box for ever)

Older series such as Thief or even Deus Ex are fun with a mesh of simple limited violence and lots of exploration/sneaking but if your on a Win7 I think both have issues even in compat mode..

Would love to hear where you settle in at..always looking myself..quite often it's the older gems I end up having the most fun with and amongst those the RP's that involved non-comp type guys in thier development are usually the best I find, we tend to be a little to fixated at times.

You might try Mirror's Edge.

It's worth playing for the art direction / unique environment alone. One of those games where it's cool to just stand there and look around sometimes (when you're not being chased.)

Even though it's referred to by some people as an FPS (I really don't get this).....it's more like a first person running game. If you try to stand around and shoot anybody you're going to get taken down. I do like a lot of the movement ideas presented in it, though.....I think it would be interesting if they incorporated some of the concepts into a more "traditional" FPS.

To say games require this or require that (such as typical combat) is just small-minded.

I also hear the same kinds of people say "you don't play FPS for a good story" and other crap like that. It's that mentality that keeps FPS in a box. I'm ready for bigger stories and more RPG elements incorporated into the genre (thank you S.T.A.L.K.E.R.).

I can't go with the violence free requirement, but if you want a story-driven game, try The Witcher series (start with 1; #2 is a continuation of the story).

They are based on a compilation of short stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, who was an international trade broker before becoming a breakout author, and is now one of Poland's best-known authors.

The Witcher is about a man named Geralt who has undergone rigorous training and some genetic mutation to become a monster slayer, a Witcher. Witchers travel from village to village, hoping to make some coin by slaying any number of supernatural monsters that haunt the people.

The games keep the books' settings perfectly, and there is no right or wrong choices, although you are constantly evaluating your morality and motivations. The games are known for this and each choice has consequences later on down the road.

The games (and books) also cater to a more mature audience, and tell a much darker tale than today's contemporary fantasy (LotR, Harry Potter, WoW)--the storyline deals with racism, genocide, terrorism, rape, and revenge. And there is sex, which isn't so much for titillation as enhancing the believability and authenticity of the games.

If you are looking for something a little deeper than today's mindless violence, I highly suggest TW1 and TW2.

And Good Ole Games (GOG.com) has TW1 for $9.99. Can't beat that for what will be 40-60 hours of rich storyline.

I would suggest Silent Hill - The Room and Silent Hill - Homecoming. Very immersive storyline, great atmosphere and superb background score. The gameplay is not that great though.

You should play Mass Effect. There is fighting and stuff, but there is a lot of story and stuff like that. Especially in Mass Effect 3, you can play it on story mode, so you do minimal fighting, but do still have to do a little bit, but there's a lot of really good story and character interactions / choices to make.
Enjoy!

You're such an idiot! it's fine to have an opinion but slagging someone off for not wanting to play same old boring shooting/fighting/killing games is just pure immature PAL.

Games like that do exist, something like Sims, or Sim City, Anno, Cities in Motion. There is just not enough of them
Go back to your mum's basement

Since this thread got rebooted, I've got one more for it.

https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/

The only "violence" in the game comes when you crash a ship, the kerbals, obviously, die. If they meet the ground without a spacecraft (IE eject with no parachute) at too high a velocity, they will disappear in a puff of smoke.

The entire game is based around designing, building and flying spacecraft and aircraft. At the moment you can set up satellite arrays, orbiters, space stations and missions to destinations to moons and planets. It's alpha at the moment so much like early minecraft there isn't a clear "point" to the game other than goals you set for yourself. You want to go to the Mun (closest moon)? Do it. You got there? How about trying there and back. What about the second moon? Another planet? Want to fly directly into the sun? Go for it. Make it happen.

X3 Is amazing, so is Masters of Orion 3, can straight diplomatic the whole game if you want to. lol

Check out the walking dead episodes 1-5. I can honestly say I've never been more attached to video game characters and how their story unfolds more than these games. In all seriousness, when I got to the end of episode 5 I almost shed a tear because I cared so much. The greatest emphasis is on story and decision making. There is some exploration but not in an open-world sandbox sense. If you have time, I think its worth a try. If not for anything else, to try a different style of game.

Start from the beginning episode 1, all decisions you make affect the story path of the following episodes.
