Question Good GPU for Optiplex 990

Hi! Recently, I bought an Optiplex 990 non-sff (i5-2400). I've been having some issues with GPU's, as my r7 260X isn't working in it (the PCIE slot is good, I have a good PSU - 600w - and the GPU is good), but my HD 6570 works. So, does anybody have any suggestions for or know any GPUs that work with the Optiplex 990 - looking for budget ones, preferably below $100 (I'm fine with low 720p gaming), preferably still up-to-date, but any GPU's help.

Nvidia's GTX10xx cards were the last non-UEFI GPUs. Hopefully you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for one.

Did you make sure to plug in the PCIe cable labled VGA or GPU from the power supply, into the GPU?

Yep, I plugged in the one labeled "PCI-E." The fans are running, it's just not showing up.

How do you know the R7 260X is good? Do you know the model of the power supply?

The R7 260x worked in other PC's (when it wasn't working in this PC, I put it in another, and I got output). The model of the PSU is the Aresgame AGW600 (I also tried it with a Rosewill LC-8500BTX with the same problems).

I've hear conflicting information with this. So, since you say that the 10xx Cards were the last non-UEFI GPU's, I'd assume that the Nvidia GPUs before the 10xx series are mainly non-UEFI. However, according to this - https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/a-non-uefi-bios-graphic-card.2942724/ - some some GPUs within this range still won't work (for example, he stated that even 750s had trouble running on some older PC's).

So, I guess my question would be, should most of the GPU's below 10xx work with my PC (I believe the release date was around 2011, if that's important), or would my best shot be just the 10xx line (I ask this as I was recommended the same line before)?

GTX 1050, GTX 1050ti, GTX 1650 should work well with your i5-2400.

using a 1050ti with my i7-2600k. It's been doing well for almost two years now.

if you're really short on cash. The GT 1030 should provide acceptable 720p gaming on certain games.

just be sure you get the GDDR5 version of the GT 1030. There is a DDR4 version of it, don't get that.

GTX 1050, GTX 1050ti, GTX 1650 should work well with your i5-2400.

using a 1050ti with my i7-2600k. It's been doing well for almost two years now.

So, doing some hunting on ebay, I found that the, with the gt 1030 w/ GDDR5 and the 10xx series, the cheapest of the cards run for about $100. However, I found that the gtx 750 (non ti) is slightly better than the 1030, is only $50, and is older than the 10xx series. Would that be a good pick, or would that not work (as I've posted above, some people say that even the 7-series cards have trouble working in older PC's. How old though, they didn't mention)?

Could have sworn that they said the 750 and 750 ti would've still been supported, but I guess not.

but really.. it's not worth investing money on gpu that is already teetering on it's way out.

the GT 1030 is a budget option. But if you can get at least a 1050ti, that would make your i5-2400 much happier. I own a 1030, a 1050ti, and a 1650.. -- there is a huge gap in ability between a 1030 and 1050 ti. I suggest saving for a 1050ti if you can wait.

) - even though it's not the exact same PC, I just put in my RTX 2060 in the 990, and it worked, so I have a hunch the 960 will (plus, 960's only run for, like, $85 on ebay).

Skip the GTX 960 and go for a 970 or 980. I've seen those going for $75-125 on ebay the last 2 weeks or so. A GTX 970 would be around a 150-200% upgrade over your R7 260X. Both GPUs will use more power, but your 600watt PSU "should" handle them without issue. Although you really don't have the best PSU brand, so I can't really say whether it's a good PSU or not. Another model from AresGame has multiple reviews and was found to be pretty bad and with suspiciously high amazon ratings.

If you do get an old used GPU, you will probably need to repaste it if the previous owner had any overheating issues.
