Looks like I may need a new monitor. I have a Dell P991 now. I think
it had one of the best displays I've seen. I believe it's a Sony
Trinitron with the Dell name - not positive.

I'd like to get something at least as good. I don't want to spend the
money for a flat monitor. I have plenty of room for a regular CRT and
they are so much cheaper.

Can someone recommend something comparable to the P991? I was looking
at the Dell M993 but it's hard to make a decision simply from the
description.

I do a fair amount of photo editing so I need something sharp with
great color.

Thanks

Carol, I have a Dell P992, which I think was the last line of the Dell
branded "Trinitrons" that they sold. I haven't seen them available since I
bought mine last year. I also have a Dell "M series" 19" monitor. It is
not a Trinitron and not as clear and flat as the old "P series" Trinitrons
they used to sell. Sorry for the information, but it seems that the flat
screen LCD's are the hot sellers now. I did see some decent looking (NEC I
think) 19" Flat Screen CRT's at the local Sam's Club the last time I was
there, maybe you should look locally. HTH

Under the "Gee how time flies" category, it should be noted that
tempus has fugitted like hell since Sony introduced their
Trinitron technology, and the patent on it has expired. Thus,
while the Dell P992 is indeed a Trinitron [and I am very happy
with mine], GOK /whose/ Trinitron it is that Dell has branded,
Sony's or someone else's.

Reading the ID plate on the back was a travel adventure. In
addition to the Dell markings, addresses, part and serial #s, it
included such things as:

Color Computer Display : P992
Komputerowy Monitor Koloroway
Fabrique Au Mexico
and [Korean ideograph] [Korean ideograph] 3902B534

That's apparently at least four countries involved, and that
doesn't count a dozen or more agency logos [e.g., Underwriters
Laboratory, FCC, etc.] from various countries also on the ID
Plate.

Since it has worked like a champ, trouble-free, for two years
now, I have never had the inclination to find out exactly whose
monitor it is that Dell has branded. Letting sleeping dogs lie,
as it were. I do mourn its passing, but accept the fact that the
future lies in flat panels, and will allow myself to be dragged
kicking and screaming into that future when this P992 dies.

It looks like it's a Sony.

Thanks, Alan. All that came with the D4400/P992 shipment was the
quick-start guide for the P992. Both the quick-start and full
manuals were there for the D4400.

Clearly it is a real Sony. Now to search out the PDF version of
that manual do download. The Dell site was being a little antsy
about letting me log in off that link. I go in anew later on to
get it.
