Was wondering about getting a 2500 barton to replace a Xp2100 palamino , mostly to explore the world of overclocking , its on an A7N8X 2.0 w/ 1 gig of corsair pc3200 . The prices @newegg are cheap enough , should I go for it , or is it a waste of $$ .

Any upgrade as long as you are going up in the world of PC's are good. Keep the value of your PC up so that upgrading costs dont actualy become costs if you know what I mean. So ye go for it and see what happanes, chances are even if you are not going to clock it then you still got a faster PC at the end of the day.

It's worth it, but only if you are going to OC. You'll get hardly any difference otherwise. If You're concerned about blowing the barton up, you could consider a T-bred 'B' 1700+ or 1800+ - they're great chips (bang for buck-wise) for overclocking, but the barton will probably give you a faster end result, and would perform slightly better at the same speed, due to the extra L2 cache.

So go for it if you want to fiddle - You've got all the other ingredients (good Ram, good Nforce2 mobo) and whatever HSF you were using to cool the pally will be fine for a barton, even if Oc'ed.. (WAY cooler than palamino)

If it's just for overclocking purposes, go get it.
But i won't recommend it at all, espcially if you want to keep the pc for 2 years or so.
