I was kind of joking! The last time I installed Win98SE... I can't remember... The last time I installed Win2000... I can't remember... The last time I installed WinXP... 2 months ago, when I bought my used DELL C840 Laptop.

I know you are not cursed, Crashman, and of course, Win98SE is good for these PC's :
Less than 256 Megs of ram
Processor under 500MHz
Small HDD (under 4 Gigs)

I actually installed WinXP in a PC with a 2.6 Gigs HDD, WinXP installed worked fine, but I got not enough room for the swap file to install basics apps like Office, duh! SO, I added a 1.6 Gigs HDD for the swap files and "My documents". This was a funny experience!

THE FACTS :
American car makers used to build good cars.
Japanese car makers used to build bad cars.
European car makers are on their way to build worst car than American.

You can't compare OLD cars with NEW cars this way, you have to look at the market. In PC technology it can be hard too, to compare different generetion OS. But overall, WinXP has improved a lot over Win98.

Oh, yes, we're not talking specifically about hardware. But I meant globally: you wouldn't take advantage of newer features if you used older software. Like going 64-bit in Opteron for servers: who would use a 32-bit aware-only copy of Linux instead of an AMD64-designed one? The latter will take you to places that the former simply won't.

So OK, right now, you might use Win98 on current hardware without losing too much (well, maybe HT). But these are future chipsets... So, in my view, it just isn't so bad to phase out the older OS's; if Win 3.11 had support for SSEx and HT, would you be using it? No. It's an evolution... So yes, the older OS will run faster on a newer machine, but that much more potential will be ruined and newer software gets written only for current or new OS's, because if MS does its job, the newer OS's are better. They can do more. More features.

And let's face it, WinXP is good. It makes Win98 pale in comparison. No crashes, no BSOD, nada. Configurations work efficiently and quickly. I use Win98SE on an older system, and I use WinXP in my current system (933Mhz P3... I'll be needing an upgrade this year, damn), and I wish the older system could handle WinXP... but it's too slow for that. So am I going to be upset if I cannot use Win98SE if I eventually upgrade to a grantsdale-based system? No, not in a million years. And the fact that someone else's older car is better than this same person's new car doesn't mean anything to me... I mean, it's an apples and oranges comparison, sorry....

Yes, but I'm sure you've heard of "1 step forward, 2 steps back". Comparing 98SE to XP in that light is like comparing a new (as in, perfectly maintained, unused) 1988 quality midsized sedan to a 2004 Suburban.
