I am fairly new to the PC MasterRace. I built a computer about a month ago and now want to overclock my cpu. I have tried once and it failed. If anyone can tell me the setting they use or ones they know work that would be greatly appreciated.

-I use the stock cooler.

Edit: Thank you sooooooooooo much mrwillyp for that information

Be careful when overclocking a CPU on the stock cooler, it can overheat the cpu very easily, but from what I've been able to gather you have a little bit of headroom to do so on the wraith coolers.

Something you need to understand when overclocking is that its not an exact science. You are not guaranteed any headroom for overclocking at all. The default core clocks are there because it is the only thing guaranteed to be stable, if they could have made all 1500xs run at a higher clock speed they would have. You aren't necessarily guaranteed to be able to overclock. However, the likelihood of that is very low. This is called the silicon lottery.

The next thing you have to ask yourself, is if you even should overclock. Overclocking puts...

The next thing you have to ask yourself, is if you even should overclock. Overclocking puts undue stress on the cpu that will lower it's overall lifespan. Doing it on a new cpu is usually not advised, because it just isn't necessary. The performance gain isn't usually to major, people usually overclock to increase performance to their liking. My general rule of thumb is that if the games I play are staying above 60fps, then there is no need to overclock.

If you still decide to overclock, which is understandable, I even overclock my 4790k. Be safe about it, and go slow, small incremental upgrades are the safest bet for getting the best performance. If you want an exact guide for it, I will post a few links at the bottom of the post.
