Been a while since I've kept up on the hardware market, so I'm a bit lost now. I was recommended to get a P965 chipset, but I'm not certain what board to get. In the past I've always gone with ASUS boards, but they have so many choices for boards now that I'm not sure what to pick. It's for a gaming rig, primarily. Any suggestions?

realistic advice, i may say, it won't be a problem because you don't "love" your motherboard in that way... anyway, the money you save on the mobo if oyu do get it and do do that to it can be spent on the medical costs

joke aside, this boards from Gigabyte are real danger.I'm medical doctor and i treated a man that worked in computer assembly company as assembler, in their computers they putted Gigabyte boards with gigabyte Video cards, and that man i treated was Lead poised.

People may doubt you doctorly credentials when you say things like

in their computers they putted Gigabyte boards

gigabyte boards are good. However, i have a GA-965P-S3 and have experiencd a number of cold boot issues when overclocked, but to be fair its fast.

but this guy is only going to put one (1) in a case, lol, and also, i think he probably would have worked in a pcb fab, not a computer assembly line, because the only way you can get lead poisoning is if it enters your body, now, i doubt touching (since they wear gloves), or inhaling (since the solder is set) will be a problem.

I think you're wrong, mate. Most, if not all, Gigabyte mobos are RoHS compliant, so they are perfectly safe...You sure you are a doctor?

i think the biggest danger is the dust and particles the charged components attract inside a computer and build up to higher then normal amounts - when you go to dust computers, be very carefull ;)

There are all sorts of bad stuff in everything these days, to stick away from the gigabyte boards because of thats like not going outside because of car polution in the air, you cant escape it.

Even better, you should walk away from your computer and never go near one again, maybe you will live one year more then the average

I have got a Gigabyte ga965p-DS4 rev 2.0.

It is the model up from the DS3, and basically is the same but has much better cooling for the chipset as it uses heatpipe coolers for chipset and for the mosfets. As a result it overclocks like a dream and is very stable. I have got Core2 Duo 6300 (2.13ghz) and it is running at 3440mhz with the stock cooler (waiting for new waterblock to arrive). The bios is very powerfull (once you press F1 to enable the advanced options) and the accompanying software is good too including Kapersky anti virus and Gigabytes own utility for ocerclocking and monitoring in windows.

There is a newer rev3 version out which has native support for 1333 fsb, but as mine is currenty running at 1720FSB it doesnt seem to be a problem (might affect multipliers but cant get my brain round that at the moment)

The Asus commando board one of the guys has mentioned is also coming up with some good reviews and some good feedback around the community, but personally I wouldn't touch an MSI board with yours if u know what I mean.

now i am a bit more curious, since i'm a mobo noob. i was leaning toward a giga ds3 based on reviews and prices at the egg, then i got impressed by a particular msi board.
two people here have already recommended the giga ds3 which shifted me back to that one, but then i see in their sig they both are using msi boards.
so i'm still in a coin toss and dont know what to call. i'm interested in getting a c2d for a new rig if that helps with recommendations. anyone got a newegg reference for like under 120 bones?
are my main options here good alternatives?:

or does the ds3 beat these?
As a mobo noob, all the boards will work just fine. I would avoid the ECS just on general principles unless you get one free from a Fry's combo deal with a Conroe.
I am currently using an Asus motherboard and have no problem recommending the Gigabyte S3 or DS3. The DS3 has better quality capacitors than the S3 to justify it's slightly higher price. Both are fine.
The NVidia chipset boards you linked will run SLI, while Intel chipset boards will not. They also have 2 IDE channels which is handy for legacy drives. If neither of these issues apply to you, then go with a P965 chipset board. If you will not be overclocking your system, then your choice of board should be based more on features and reliability than which board is the current forum favorite.

I'm not sure what you are getting at? I have an MSI mainboard and it runs fine, it OCs very well too, probably only second to the XBX(badaxe) for a X975 overclocker. So, what is supposedly wrong with these boards?

Once again, the S3 (not DS3) is the best board for $100 if you dont need raid! Bar none!
Im a big MSI fan from way back, however the overclocking articles and THG mobo shootout pushed me toward the cheap S3, Im very happy with it.
DrBiggles did not say anything about overclocking...

bottom line - it sesms that the DS3 will be fine, if you really care about your sperm them where gloves, but if it is Rohs complinet it should be a problem.

the end

(this has to be the daftest conversation yet 8O )
