Good PC - Bad FPS!?!

Hello there! I am having issues with my (Fairly) good gaming PC. I am unsure of the cause, but I suspect it could be the Graphics Card.

Here are my specs:

XFX 7950 DD Edition
AMD FX6300 @3.5GHz
8GB Kingston HyperX Blu 1600MHz
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3
Antec GX700 Case
Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit
Corsair CX750M

I just upgraded the CPU yesterday from a Athlon II x4, I was expecting a huge performance boost, but that didn't occur.

I play all games at 1080p. Battlefield 4 is my main game, and on a 64 player server on ultra, I get around 30FPS in congested areas? I've seen benchmarks better than this

How can I test my GPU for faults? Any suggestions appreciated.

so you "upgraded" from a 6 core to a quad core? anyways the only thing that I can think of is to re-install the OS and Motherboard drivers (if you have some).

My friend is using the r9 280x (similar to yours) and is getting 60fps even in congested areas and he has a phenom II processor of some sort. I have the same graphics card (overclocked version) but im using the amd 8350 x8 core (next one up from yours) and I have a similar issue to you (around 42-45 fps in congested area's).

I now feel inclined to believe that our family of processors aren't very well supported. I do have perfect fps on ultra on maps such as golmund, silk road and operation locker however.

Good luck in isolating the problem my friend. If I heat anything I'll let you know.

I'm going to give intel rapid storage a try for my samsung 840 250gb SSD in the hope that that may work, tonight.

No I upgraded to the FX6300 FROM the Athlon II

Apparently, DICE and AMD worked together to make the FX processors work better in BF4, hasn't done much!

I literally just reinstall Windows 7 Pro when I upgraded the CPU. I also have the latest drivers.

I am wondering if it's a Graphics Card issue? (XFX 7950 DD)

How can I test my card for faults?

how about turn it down from ultra, if the fps doesn't improve, it a cpu issue.

Hey man. I did say I would return if I found anything in regard to our similar issues. I do believe I've found my issue and its to do with the motherboard chipset. I know we have different mobo's but just so you know, mine Is the asus m5a78L-m v2 and it seems that the chipset is canny enough, and chuggs along just fine but once the 8350 and the r9 280x opens up to start putting out a lot of data, the poor little chipset on my mobo can't keep up with the big guns (cpu/gpu). Wish I'd known this quite some time ago because I've been robbing myself of quite a lot of performance for some time. Just never thought it would be the chipset. My last mobo had the 790x chipset and the new asus sabretooth r2.0 has the 990x amd chipset in it and I can confirm that it has made a made everything fine.

Please don't assume that this is your solution but if you exhausted all other possible causes like I did, and updated everything including your bios etc, then there's a chance that you have the same issue as me.

Thank you! My mobo has the SB950 Chipset. I was thinking of getting an upgrade anyway since I need front USB3 ETC.

What would you recommend for around £100?

Again I have to say thomas, that I'm a bit anxious about you spending 100 quid on a new mobo simply based on my resolution. Granted, there's a very good chance that it'll work for you too but considering the fact that you have a completely different mobo/chipset to me, I feel that you should perhaps research a little more into your chipset. I'll be honest with ya though, although the sb950 is 3+ years old, it was never the best when it came to 'nerd testing' it on the south bridge for transfer rates although me and you are clearly only bothered about game performance ha 😉 .... I got my new mobo for 110 from a local pc shop that is pretty cool tbh. My only prob with it is that it is still pcie 2 when pcie 3 amd boards should be hitting the shelves shortly, since intel have already done so.

Like I say though, the sabretooth r2.0 is what I have now. Didn't even reformat my ssd 😀 it just worked. Hopefully it doesn't splode!!

Have you updated your bios yet? That's very important to ensure your processor is playing nice with your mobo. It was a very common chore for anyone with an older am3 mobo when the 6100 and 8350 processors were launched.

I'm pretty chuffed I can use my usb 3 ports on the front of my case now btw haha. It is nice but I'm more pleased about the possitive difference the chipset made.

I've tried bios versions F6 and F7a. They both perform the same. My Gigabyte GA970A-DS3 is hopeless for over clocking too, so I can't squeeze any extra performance out of it.

I might buy a nice PCI 3 motherboard, as my graphics card could take advantage of this.
