So, what's in the pipes for 2005? I think I've gotten completely out of
touch. At least I knew what to anticipate in 2004, but 2005 is drawing a
complete blank.

I think I'll get Evil Genius and Galactic Civilizations as soon as their
price drops to ~$30 CAD.

GalCiv is about to drop a new version so that might help.

There are also new versions in the works for Space Empires and Dominions.

Interesting that only sequels look good now

We have sequels all over the place:

Silent Hunter III
Dangerous Waters (Sequel to Sub Command)
Empire Earth II
Strategic Command II
Blitzkrieg II
Cossacks II
Combat Mission II (maybe - no date and a completely new engine from what I
hear)

Now Anglo-German War 1939 - 1945 is NOT a sequel and, thus, exceptional.

Huh ??? - from the screenshots it looks almost exactly like
Russo-German War. It sure looks like a duck, don't know about the
quaking part ... care to elaborate ?

and Strategic Command 2's only resemblence with 1 is the subject
matter, so this only qualifies as a "sequel" because it has the same
developer.

The AGW engine is very different from RGW, as is the subject matter. Maybe
you only look at games.

re-huh ??

- Both are 2D hex games
- Both WWII
- Both use the same game-scale/unit-scale

Yet you claim that they're "very different" - ok - in what way ? Your
claim looks a bit thin based on what outsiders have seen so far. If
you're an insider and are bound by the NDA I'll take your word for it
but if not you'll have to come up with something more substantial then
re-iterating the "very different" mantra.

Supply, C&C, things like that. If it was only a change in maps and OOBs, it
wouldn't have taken so long to develop/

Sure there will be changes - it's not a scenario pack add-on for RGW -
I'm hoping for some extensive work on the user interface too. In a post
on a forum somewhere the developer also mentioned a lot of work on the
AI. But it basically remains the same engine, hence I call it a sequel.

Given that Strategic Command 2 is written from scratch I don't know why
SC2 qualifies as a sequel in your eyes and RGW doesn't.

Questionable given that Ron Dockal (lone developer) has a full-time
paid job - as a rocket scientist if I'm not mistaken.

Map, oob research and scenario design *do* take a lot of time - I've
had some first-hand experience with that.
Anyway we'll know soon enough. Looking forward to this release.

OK, I see your point; "II" doesn't necessarily mean a sequel. I would
wonder how much different SC2 will be from as SC as opposed to the
difference of AGW to RGW because overlooking graphics (not a real
consideration with Ron - a programmer for Honeywell BTW), the engine for AGW
will be very different from RGW. Remember, RGW morphed from a collection
of campaigns with battles playable separately into the whole 1941-45 thing.
An RGW II is in the works with an AGW engine. Ron may be the final
programmer but a couple of guys on the list have been sending him code.
We've all been sending him suggestions.

Oh, got it now - SC2 is a sequel in the sense that it remains a
strategic level game of the ETO (subject), while I was looking at it
from a codebase pov where SC2 is re-written from scratch and has a
totally different look and feel (engine evolution).

That *is* news :)

Good - it can only make the game better. Looking forward to it.
