No desktops because the corporate world will want to store all their proprietary data on Google's servers - and Google is so above all the rest that they would never peek into that data or try to mine it for a profit? I'm sure Microsoft and Autodesk will be the first to embrace this cloud computing model with Google being St. Peter at the Gate...

(Wasn't there something about Carl Sagan saying extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof or something?)

what about the complete lack of sustainability of making all those lithium batteries... cellphones and smart phones are enough of a drain on the lithium deposits.

Desktops will never go completely out of style... the modding culture is way too entrenched. I am yet to see a liquid cooled PC... or a Stargate laptop. I realize it was hyperbole, but all the same... it was just really foolish to even suggest that some of the larger portions of the desktop market will simply vanish. That said, in two years there won't be anymore case fans... heat won't be a problem.

I don't see phones taking the place of desktops any time soon. Laptops might. I use a laptop at work with a dock and 2 monitors. Except for the fact that I can easily take it on trips, it might as well be a desktop.

I don't know if it will be 3 years, but its true that desktops are becoming irrevelant. Not to people like the average Tom's reader, but the public in general. The average Joe doesn't need an i7 and a 5870 to update his Facebook status, or to spew garbage on Twitter.

Hardcore gamers will soon have to deal with the fact that gaming is no longer viable on the PC. They will become a non issue as developers focus on dedicated gaming systems. The only games that may still see dollars are multimonitor type games such as Flight sims or Racing Sims. The new gaming systems run the games better, in most cases, than a pc because the code has been optimised for a much more controlled enviournment.

I didn't buy a 28" monitor because I wanted to play Bejewled on it all day. Games and multitasking will demand large screen (meaning not laptops or phones) for the foreseeable future.

I think the statement has a point, it being that a mobile device such as a laptop can serve the needs of the majority of users. It's all going in that direction anyways, majority of homes would rather purchase a laptop over a desktop given the freedom and mobility it offers. It also has the ability to connect to larger screens, a full keyboard, a mouse, a printer and various other peripherals. Given the GPU video processing power that is showing up on a lot of laptops, it can also satisfy most casual gamer needs. I think desktops are going to be more for niche' crowd that loves to have the latest and greatest as time goes along.

until it's possible to build your own laptop, and i don't mean some kit that you only get to choose a cpu and you end up with a 3 inch thick monster, I will be swearing by the desktop.

And what do I do with all my data and processing power?
The simple fact that a desktop is large and immobile is to it's benefit. It doesn't have to fit in a pocket so it has unlimited hardware options, unlimited power usage, unlimited heat displacement.

He should put the crack pipe down...

In 3 years...

Most Corporations will be using WindowsXP/IE6 until 2014...

I work for a fortune 500 corp. and we will be on XP until 2014.

The only cloud that we might use in a distant future will be internal.

LMAO, this statement is almost as good as Bill Gates when he said computers would never need more than 640k of memory! lol!!!

Riiiiiight... This guy is talking about accessing information and that sort of thing. He is definitely not thinking about gaming or any high intensity computing. I don't see a cell phone playing Direct X 11 games in 3 years.

Even if you could hookup a full size keyboard, mouse and display to one of these mobile devices, you'd still need rock-solid CHEAP fast internet and good business apps. You'd need a way to hook up other legacy peripherals. And for me, you'd need one without a camera, as the are not allowed in my building. Try finding that.

Desktops will be irrelevant in three years? Tell that to the 90,000,000 people who just purchased Win7.

And how will our business run? We have three desktop workstations on a network. You telling me we'll be looking up customers and printing documents from a phone?

Doubt it.

You can take my desktop, when you pry it out of my cold dead hands!

I think eventually desktops will get replaced by a laptop type device but it won't be in the next 5 years. Components are getting smaller and smaller and more integrated but, the desktop still has a purpose and still has the power and still has the flexibility that currently can not be substituted.

If laptops were powerful enough they could replace desktops. If consoles were powerfull enough and offered the same gameplay experience as desktops they could replace desktops. If media centers had the full flexibility as htpc the could replace desktops.

Now that's a tall order to fill... good luck.
