GRRR!"[/citation]
Your an idiot if you don't think China is still RED.

[citation][nom]pei-chen[/nom]Does this mean Google's internet security team are not up to the task?[/citation]

Sounds like it. Or Google spend too much money on A*roid and no money to hire additional internet security work force to fight the hackers.

[citation][nom]invlem[/nom]There's a difference between abiding by the chinese governments censorship regulations and having your customers accounts being hacked into by them. The hacking exposes serious security risks for google, gmail is gmail regardless of which country its subscribers are based. If they start hacking chinese gmail accounts whats stopping them from hacking into non-chinese gmail accounts. In this respect I can totally understand Google's stance and quite frankly the security of the rest of their gmail accounts worldwide might be worth a billion dollars to them.[/citation]
Odd how you get a thumbs up for saying that but I get a thumbs down

[citation][nom]Godhatesusall[/nom]Google won't do it.....Seriously,does anyone here believe that a huge multi-national corporation will just throw away 1 bn $ just because they "care about censorship"?[/citation]
Agreed. Looks like a PR move to keep up the "Google is a good guy" image. Never mind they have 90%+ of the search market and are actually hurting other companies with subsidized youtube/google code/google whatever.

Actual revenue is $300 million a year not $1 billion.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/14/world/asia/14beijing.html?pagewanted=2&ref=technology

Also, even if google doesn't end up actually leaving, it's a good wake up call to the Chinese government that they can't just keep imposing their strict censorship on the world if they expect foreign companies to keep investing there.

I also find it funny the government claims all their censorship is to prevent spread of porn as sex is considered morally degrading, yet at the same time, any well to do man in China is expected to have at least 1-2 mistresses.

i don't know where you get the $1billion number. From the link in the article it says google makes between $300-600 million, they don't say if that is gross or net. but it only accounts for less then 5% of googles income. agen they don't specify whether or not that is gross or net income. if those are gross numbers, china is really a losing market for google.

The whole western world should bring China down for good.

First: Kill the WTO
Second: Ban Chinese exports to the western world
Third: Watch them go bankrupt, starve and then go to civil war!

Sigh... Old news. Drudge Report carried this story early yesterday. Nice try though.

Could be an interesting move by Google nonetheless. I wonder if and how the US government will get involved in this, because this will have negative effects on the relationship between the two nations.

I always say whats on my mind, and the thumbs up/down thing doesn't alter my opinion, but expressing a positive feedback then a negative feedback for the same thing makes them a bit of a prick.

I remember what google initially was - The Anti-corporation. Its whole thought process in the beginning was that it was different from the other conglomerates. However, as time progressed and they became immensely wealthy, they have strayed from their own philosophy in my opinion. Between that and their potential information hoarding, I have a while back switched to a combo of bing + yahoo and pretty much said fuck google. However, ANY company that will close up shop on a $1 billion a year branch just to say screw a government, is ok in my book, and will have proven they are not merely the corporate machine they once hated, and still have a little bit of what made them what they are hanging around. That said, should they close up shop in China, I'll switch searching back to google, and will likely shit-can my iPhone in favor of a droid one on general principle. This is how strongly I'd agree with them moving out due to the unfair and facist government of China.
End personal thought, I dont believe for a goddamn minute they are serious and agree with Mr. godhatesusall that its likely a PR move.

Chinese government censorship and privacy policies and cultural differences have nothing to do with the rest of the world. The Chinese government is not censoring the World or hacking non-Chinese people's accounts. The world is a very big and diverse place and what is considered immoral or taboo in one country may be considered normal in another country.

Google leaving or not leaving would have very little impact on how the Chinese government operates. I doubt very much that the Chinese government would even notice or care if Google left.

Well considering I am chinese, and my entire family lives in China I think I know what I'm talking about.

The government here makes a big deal about how the world invests in China, and how china is growing in important. So yes, it's a big deal if google leaves. It'll hurt the image of the government and it's grand vision of China becoming more and more critical to the world.
At the same time, the people in china in no way consider the censorship to be fair. The invasion of privacy has nothing to do with cultural differences, it's a fundamental human right issue.

Also, the whole mistresses thing is a huge issue, and very hypocritical of the government officials. Several of my uncles are going through very difficult time with their wives as they're found out about their mistresses.

[citation][nom]vestin[/nom]The Chinese kind. I'm glad you asked. They are a communist country with free-market economy. Again - don't make the false (marxist in its nature, BTW) assumption that once you've described the country's economy, you know everything about its government and society. Also - I believe that while Google does care about profits it also simply wants to make the world a better place. Call me naive, but I believe that Google not only is not and will not be evil... it's actually a force of good, not just another corporation with splendid PR.[/citation]
We can only hope.

It's funny how most people just talk about the small money that Google has to gain by staying. There is massive corporate espionage taking place on America from China and it's citizens, inside and out. Google and 30 other fortune 500 companies just got hacked into, this is serious, and if Americans think they can keep living in a fantasy land where everyone is friends and we can just sit on our couch and play Xbox you are mistaken. China does not care about American and is only using America and Americans in every way they can to get ahead and once they fully complete their goal they will get rid of you. If you read any type of China tech forums they always have tons of "Support our countries products" posts etc. Why else do you think Baidu has the majority share? Because it's better than Google? That is a joke if you think so. I think China and it's products need to be boycotted in a major way in all areas. There is a stranglehold on our country with 90% Made in China products on our shelves, they own trillions of dollars of our debt, they send millions of students to our schools to get our technology to take back to their country, they don't care about Americans or our culture they start their own cities in our cities, they also have huge numbers of lobbying groups to protect their interests in our government and businesses. The only reason China wants Google to stay is so they can be used for the investment they bring to the country not to mention the technology and knowledge that can be stolen and copied just to be given to local competitors. Americans and the world in general needs to wake up and stop being naive. Good for Google if they make this move and others that follow.

Good for Google, Now we can ask Google to do the same in this country . I mean really do u call Google a "true" search engine ? "not". It "Google" censors every search all in the name of speed. How you mite ask, they have their own directory of listings that use from previous search's. For example, i type Google.com,(Google) see's my IP originating from, in my case Canada, it Google brings me to Google.ca. because it believes that is what i want "NOT" ,oh it then sees i come from french part of Canada and then i thinks i want french content too.
That is censorship, Back in the mid 90's a search engine by the name of
NorthernLights.com would give me thousands of hits from every country in the world as long as that word was part of the meta tag of the web site. It would then subdivide it into categories like government, educational, entertainment , etc. It gave me the control over all my search's so that i could look at thousands of search's and narrow it
down to what i needed. Sadly that engine was bought and made private
so that u had to pay for every search. Just so food for thought.
Google u are a bunch of Hippocrates.

In China, the government values it's image a lot. With the benefit of free media yes in the US and western world the government's indiscretions are known. HOWEVER, INSIDE china, the people strongly believe the government is good and has the best interests of the ppl in mind. A huge part of this is ANY sort of bad news, or bad for government image news is censored. Google actively helps the government achieve this at the moment.

As for marriage, unlike the west, (on the topic of cultural differences here), marriage is highly regarded in China and divorces are very rare and very much frowned upon. So, yes in China and in the Chinese culture it's a HUGE deal to get a divorce. I consider it a positive over the west where you have people marrying and divorcing on the same day.
