GPU doesn't display anything on the monitor

I have just finished building my new pc but when I turned it on it booted up but the monitor remained blank. After taking out different components etc. I eventually found that the computer booted up and displayed on the monitor fine when the gpu wasn't in. I installed windows and put the gpu back in, but the screen still remains blank.
So basically everything works perfectly without the graphics card but when I put it in nothing is displayed on the monitor, however the card does light up and the fans spin when it's plugged in.
Does anyone know what the problem could be or how I can fix it, or will I have to send the card back?
(I haven't installed any drivers yet, does that make a difference?)
(the gpu is a sapphire radeon r9 280x)

Solution
Silly question... Did you plug the display cable into the 280X or the motherboard? It sounds to me like you're plugging into the onboard video out instead of the video card.

Good luck
:)

I tried that before and it didn't work but after seeing your answer I decided to try it again and it worked. I don't know what I was doing wrong the first time but thanks for the answer anyway.
It's my first time building a computer so a few silly mistakes are acceptable :)

You're not the only one to have this happen. Something may have had a bad connection on your first try. On my last build the cpu had to be reseated even though it was fully seated the first time, or so I thought.

Glad to have helped
