I have an older tower that I use for just playing music and old emulator games on and someone gave me a this Nvidia 9500gt GPU , yeah, yeah it's old as crap, I know, but I don't need fancy graphics on this thing). Here's my problem:
When I install the card, power on, the hdwr wiazrd pops up and it automatically installs the driver and recognizes the card. It says I have to reboot, and when I do, the GPU has some sort of error booting up. Does this mean the card is bad? When I uninstall the Generic and try to install the driver from nvidia's site, it says it cannot find any nvidia compatible devices? I'm just confused, because it shows up in my DevMgr.

Solution
I guess take it out to the trash then its just a disposable computer any way kinda like a bic lighter ..

any way good luck and enjoy and welcome to dell

on some pc when you add a gpu and reboot the gpu wont come on the mb will still be using onboard video ports. sometime you have to change video setting from onboard to ext video. also check to see if your mb has the newest bios file to rule out a bios bug. on the gpu card google the part and serial number . see if it a dell or hp card. if it is it have a dell bios or hp bios and need there drivers. on the gpu see if it needs any extra power some of the older gpu have a 4 pin molex or fan connector for extra power.

I am pretty sure it is already set to ext video output, as I don't use the integrated video. I currently have an Nvidia 8500GT in it. It isn't too much of a difference between the two, but definitely better than what's in it, basically the same card but newer generation so I don't see there being an issue with power. The BIOS is up to date, I did that the last time I got into this thing. The only connection I see on it is the little 2-pin, which I believe is for audio through the GPU. It is an EVGA vid card, the driver they had on their site wouldn't install either and was actually older than what they had on the actual nvidia site.

I'll give it a try. I got it from a friend (who was the original owner of it) who had it in an old system he was getting rid of and I snatched it. So I don't think your first idea is the problem. I am thinking it may just be a bad card since it works fine in safe mode, but when you try to boot it with the driver active, it doesn't work. It was free, so if it doesn't work I'm just gonna toss it.

sounds like that old board don't have a supported bios . these cards need a uefi [and then that may need latest support as well ] and may fail to work on legacy bios

not hard to look in to that and see sad part is they don't tell you this up front you find out after the buy and fact

what is you motherboards make and model ??

That doesn't make sense. It is only one generation newer than the card that is in it. There shouldn't be any problem running it. They are both DDR2. If that were the case, then I don't think it would even work in safe mode, which it does. I'm kinda thinking that the card is just toast, as it works fine without a driver loaded (i.e SafeMode) but not when Windows boots normal. Plus, the whole Nvidia driver not being able to recognize it.

''That doesn't make sense. It is only one generation newer than the card that is in it. There shouldn't be any problem running it''

that's how it is these days like old 750 ti's had a switch for legacy and uefi use but now the one you get today do not and now may not work as well

today you now got to support them cause there not supporting you and things aint so plug and play any more

This isn't a new card though. There isn't really any reason why it shouldn't work other than it just being toast. It's only 512mb, it's nothing fancy. This is the gpu: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130395 The PC is an old Dell Dimenion e510. I have read of other people using these cards (and much better ones) with no problems at all. In fact, it even uses the same driver as the card I have in it now (a piece of crap 8500GT)

I noticed that it seems to not fully boot into windows, so there must be some sort of error. If I kill the power, it makes the shut down tone right away. I checked it with cpu-z, or tried to at least. When I tried to load cpu-z in safe mode, it gave me an error. The cpu-z box shows up and shows my cpu and mobo info, but the GPU info is blank. I'm thinking the card is just doo-doo. I was going to see if using the dvi outs made a difference, but at this point I don't think it'd be worth the time to go get a dvi to hdmi adapter to try it out.

dude , its a dell with a dell proprietary motherboard and a dell proprietary bios the boards bios has to hand shake with the cards bios just to start

not that it means anything check the cards dell has your listed as compatible [under more details ]

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?k=nvidia&c=us&category_id=7566&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&~ck=anav&p=1&sort=price&dgc=BA&cid=306033&lid=5794655&acd=123092276202786738c101156640&ven3=114603439655788189

like here you see that 8400 its listed as compatible

you got to know the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

in the end any upgrade you do is all your own risk . the prebuilt manufactures only guarantees there computers work as sold to you as is out of the box from there factory with what they put on it , not a drop more

there in business to sell you whole ready to go computers , and dont worry about you upgrading them or giving you support to do so . thats not how they make there money they prefer you run to wal-mart and buy there ''better'' latest models

At my own risk? No $sh!t sherlock! I'm not a newbie. I'm just saying there is no reason why this card shouldn't work. For example, I'm currently running an ASUS 8500GT, which by your logic wouldn't work and it works fine! Did you read the part that I don't really care at this point? I found this post though: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/340602-28-dell-dimension-e510-processor-upgrade So I think I'm just gonna wait until I have extra cash and give it a lil upgrade. I can find the parts on eBay for like $30-40.

am I'm saying there is

''At my own risk? No $sh!t sherlock! I'm not a newbie''

sounds like you are to me ???

''currently running an ASUS 8500GT, which by your logic wouldn't work '' you do see that 8000 series card listed as a compatible card , right ?? you see that 710 is not right ?? and so on

anyway good luck with that proprietary dell and sorry you don't grasp any of this as most do the hard way

oor your new used card is junk from the get go ??

this driver shows as supported [win7 ] and its the latest for that card xp needs a older driver 340.52

LOL Are you comic book guy from the Simpsons? Sure sounds like you are. You should try to find a way to not be a total dick. I grasp what you are saying just fine, I know Dell's can be picky and it might very well be the case. It might also just be this particular manufacturer's card. All I'm saying is don't something as a hard fact, there's nothing wrong with being proven wrong from time to time. I never assumed my GPU was good from the start, just that it wouldn't work (it was free so I could care less if it works or not). I KNOW how to find/install drivers, in fact that is the same driver the GPU I have now uses, so what's your point? If you read the post, I tried to install that driver from safe mode (yes, AFTER uninstalling what is already on it) with the 9500 and it says "no NVIDIA card found" so I think the card is toast.
