My configuration:
CPU: Intel i7-4930k
GPU: ASUS direct cu ii GTX 780 3GB
Motherboard: ASUS P9X79-E WS
RAM: 64GB G.Skill trident X
BIOS: Up to date
PSU: Corsair AX1200i
SSD: Crucial mx500 500gb
OS: Windows 10
My current problem is that when I am loading a new application or just opening something, the screen would occasionally freeze for 5 second then it would turn black, then turn back on and work perfectly. Sometimes during the process of the display turning black, the display would have random colourful static squares (thus my assumption that this is a gpu problem). Also during the freeze my GPU utilization would spike to 100% (see image). The Cpu usage is not hitting anywhere above 40% so the cpu is not the bottleneck. Temperatures for both the CPU and GPU are around 31-35 degrees celsius when the GPU spike happens. The freeze would sometimes occur in Chrome but has since stopped once I turned off Chrome hardware acceleration. Another clue is that whenever the display turns black and then comes back on, night shift colours(the yellow tint) would disappear... does this mean the gpu is restarting or something?
I don't think the power supply is the problem as none of these components use up to the supplied wattage of the PSU. Though, I have not tried to use a different power supply wire to the GPU or plug the wires into a different PSU port. Would these help? I have also not cleaned the GPU, but the temperatures seem to be doing ok. Do I just have a failing GPU? I know it's quite old. I actually just got this computer so I don't know whether this problem has occurred in the past. Thanks in advanced for any help!
