Question GPU temp 75ºC Hotspot 106,5 fans at max RPM

Hi guys, so the last few months I been feeling somethings not the same with my EVGA RTX 2070 Black Gaming (https://www.evga.com/products/specs/gpu.aspx?pn=1207a8ec-269d-4e11-91a9-e01226652c9f).

For example, A few weeks ago I used to be able to run 2 complete loops of Heaven benchmark with the hotspot temp around 98~100º.

(Forgot to mention, it does the same thing on games too!!!)

But now after only 50~55 seconds GPU temp is 75ºC~77ºC and Hotspot temp is 106.5ºC and so the fans go max speed.

I tried with hwinfo and gpuz and the only termp sensors aviables are GPU and Hotspot.

The card have been runing the last 5 years without issues, never been repasted, and so never replaced the thermal pads either.

Anyone know where the hotspot may be?, Could this be Memory or VRMs?

Thank you to anyone who may have stumble with this same problem.

Time to repaste the GPU.

It is one of many sensors on the gpu die.

You think it may be time for new thermal pads too?, I mean if I take apart the GPU and the pads are not broken, and not dried out, should I worry about them?, Or better start with the chip alone first?
No. One thing at a time, and if they ain't broke, don't fix 'em.

Could be GPU could be pads breaking down a bit especially under high temps.

Thank you very much to all of you!!!

I have changed hundreds of CPUs thermal paste, but I only changed 1 GPUs paste, and that was long time ago.

I'm going to start with the thermal paste ( tomorrow). And try to post an update as soon as Im done testing the basic, like that the card is not worst than now lol.

i recommend mx6 paste idle my temps on a 4070 super idle 36c with no fans on max temp 77c with 86 hotspot.

its thick but recommend doing x method or 2 lines in the middle of the die or x method

thermal pads depends on thickness

ARCTIC TP-3: Premium Performance Thermal Pad work well.

but you may need thicker

SYY Thermal Pads work well also

Well, I got a brand new MX4 syringe (the new formula one) to use. So I'm guessing I will try that one first, and if its not good enough I may try something more expensive.

As for the thermal pads I will see what I can get if its need it. Where I live is not that easy to come by with some brands.... not to say most good brands.

Thank you for your input!!!

Ambient temperature?

What is your case, and how is the airflow?

Edit: I notice you have a BQ 500DX - same as me, and a nice cool case. Have you cleaned the intake grille and mesh?

Ambient temp has been around 26 to 31ºC, I have a fan in the room (sadly no AC in here), and I have tried at different times (day~night) and the result is always the same (GPU temp wise).

As for cleaning the case, is very, very clean, not only the case, but the whole system including the GPU itself. Both old and new one.

Yes, because no more 500DX. I need it to go smaller so I got a Silverstone Fara H1M (yes I know, is a downgrade, but it was the best smaller case I could find here) with 4 fans: 2x Arctic P12 PWM as intake at the front panel, and 2 fans as exhaust (one P12 PWM on the back panel, and the Silverstone included one on the rear top panel).

But, BIG but!, temps and behavior was exactly the same the last weeks on the bequiet 500DX. In fact last time I tested on the 500DX (two days ago) with the same games and benchmark the issue was there.

PD Im going to update my signature.

With those ambient temperatures, I would expect the GPU to run fairly hot - it often reaches 35 degrees indoors (in summer) where I am!

You can mitigate this to an extent by enabling VSYNC in the graphics driver or game settings; this may reduce performance, game depending.

Thank you, but I never play games without vsync, Is always enable and matching my monitor (60Hz max).

Yes I know high ambient temps will make GPU run hot, as it will with any other component, but Im pretty sure
this happening to my GPU is not normal, and not only related to ambient temp.

I guess we will find out tomorrow when I get some free time to do the re-paste.

I will get everything ready, heat the GPU a little bit so is easier to take it apart, clean old stuff, put new one, reassembly and test. Im guessing temps wont be awesome right away since paste may need to cure a little bit.

Thanks!

Well... update time:

After done the repaste, Im glad to inform:

- I put the GPU back into the PC
- Turn it on and let it idle in Windows for 10 mins (by this time I wasn't sure if it was better or not).
- Put a windowed game, not very hard on graphics just to heat up the paste a little bit. Played for 15 mins.
- Let the PC idle in Windows for another 10 mins.
- Did some excel and browing stuff.
- After about 40mins I launched Heaven Benchmark:
-- About 4~5 loops (sorry lost the count)
-- Something like 14~15 mins running
-- Max Temps: GPU: 70.2ºC - Hot Spot: 86.2ºC

So thank you so much to all @drivinfast247 @Phaaze88 @beyondlogic @PiersPlowman!!!!

It seems it was about time to repaste. I will keep on eye on it for at least a week or two.

Cheers!!!

PD I'm pretty sure the thread is a question, but I'm not able to mark it as solved.
