So I've finally upgraded everything apart from the GPU as i cant decide what the best move is for me!? I'm currently running a R9 290 tri-x, i want to keep up to speed with ultra to very high settings in the latest and upcoming games. For example I've had to lock Assassins Creed Odyssey at 30fps with medium to high settings to get something smooth without jitters.

I have a 27" samsung monitor 60hz I game at 1080p so I don't know if i should go with a GTX1070, RX580 or should i push for the 1080 (i get the 1080 is probably overkill). I'm looking to hit a smooth 60fps+ (obviously game dependent).

I may look to get a 144hz monitor at some point in 2019 but its not high on the list of priorities!

I did look at the costs for them 2nd hand on ebay but you can't tell who's been mining (unless they have several up for sale) and the pricing seems to be 70-90% off what they are new so i think new will be my best bet ....any ideas?

Sorry, i have the following:

Ryzen 5 2600x, Kraken x61 cooler, MSI X470 gaming pro carbon, Corsair Vengeance 16BG DDR4 3000mhz, 250gb samsung evo SSD and 1TB Toshiba HDD

Anything 1070 or over will be overkill, but if you expect to get 60fps for 3-5 years the cost will be justified.
However if you're on a budget, the gtx 1060/RX 580 will definitely give you 60+ fps.
For amd, don't bother with high refreshrate. Stick to higher resolution and quality over refresh rate. High refresh rate monitors need to driven by Intel's high IPC and boost/overclocks to ensure FPS can match the refresh rate.

Sure, I'm looking for something future proof for the next few years but I was reading that the r9 290 tri-x is basically on par with the 1060s and only about 10% difference, so hardly worth the upgrade. So i thought that the 1070 would be my minimum jump for any significant price to performance justification.

I know i can pick up an RX580 much cheaper so that has a benefit for another upgrade in a years time if i get a new monitor to at least push to 2 or 4k.

For the money, the upgrade isn't worth it. RX-580 is not much better than a R9-290. I feel if an upgrade is in order than you need at least a 50% increase in performance to justify the cost. I would go for at least a Vega-56 (the MSI Air Boost model is a good deal), or maybe a GTX-1070 if you are so inclined. At least that way you are getting a really noticeable upgrade.

Do you know i didn't even consider the Vega 56, i figured they would be more expensive than they are!

If i look at the 1070s do i want to stick with the ASUS, MSI, EVGA brands over gigabyte, PNY, Zotac etc..........I'm guessing the only difference really is the cooling and and OC with the latter brands not being as good?
