If you have a very large graphics card with a large and heavy heatsink, it can physically bend the PCIe slot it's plugged into on the motherboard and "droop".

If I have a motherboard with a steel-reinforced PCIe slot and a graphics card with a metal backplate, will this still be a problem?

Possibly, it would just take longer for the card to droop.
You could get a GPU support.
