APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: As soon as I figure out the build BUDGET RANGE: $1,000 But that is for the entire computer besides, case and Monitors.

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Mainly going to be used for work. Architectural design using, Rhino 3D and Sketch Up. Also lots of rendering in a multitude of programs. Being able to play games would be nice but not the focus of the computer.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: New computer so no previous Gfx or PSU

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Looking at the core i7 2600k but may settle for the i5 2500k depending on the cost of everything else. Will be running windows 7. Aiming for 16gigs of Ram.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com is preferred but open to other reputable dealers in the USA

PARTS PREFERENCES: From what I have read so far, Nvidia seems to be the way to go for this type of card as they are far more stable driver wise and many programs are optimized for their design.

OVERCLOCKING: No SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Undecided, Most likely 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: One main thing I would like to see is a good comparison of how Work station cards compare to Gaming cards when it comes to doing 3D modeling and Rendering. Because unfortunately from what I have seen most workstation cards are very expensive.

If I am missing anything blatantly obviously just let me know and will respond as soon as I see it.

Thank You for any help.

Well, I'd recommend a SSD, and an HDD.This SSD should do fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227510
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The RAM, s fine, but the CPU is ridiculous. The F-X series is in NO way better than a 2500k, or 2600k. I'd go with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 and for the mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157270
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and for the GPU...I am more of a gammer, so I do not know so much about this area, but from what I read this seems to be good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133272 It's not going to run Battlefield 3 on ultra, but it can run games on lower settings since you said you wanted some gaming capability. The GTX 560ti's he recommended are definitively geared towards gaming and not rendering.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's about the same price-a little more expensive but well worth the performance.

Wow a $400 gtx 460 768mb.
That is a lot for firmware.
OP I'm not sure how comfortable with Computer hardware you are.
It is very possible to flash the firmware.
This same card could be bought for 100 dollars and have the firmware flashed.
I have not done this myself but it can be done and it does not appear to be terribly difficult.

It's not a GTx 460... It's a quadro which is best for 3d rendering... That Quadro that WindosDOS picked is useless nowadays.. Get the Quadro 4000 for $700 and also get the 2700k for better rendering(2500k for gaming mostly)...

So From what I have read the FX series is a joke so I think im gonna stick with either the i5 or the i7.

The only issue I have with the MOBO you recommended WindowsDos is that it only supports 2 sticks of Ram. Which would mean buying 2 8 gig sticks which is roughly 250$ and 16gigs of 4gig sticks is less than 100.

@spentshells: I dont think I would have an issue flashing the card but from everything i have read the new cards are different enough that flashing them isnt enough to get them to perform similar to the quadro series. I think the older ones it was an option for but I didnt think it was an option for the newer cards. And what would be a similar card to that one that I could flash to make it the same thing? Or is crossfire or SLI a better option than getting a workstation card?

If your primarily using Rhino then it would be best to visit the Rhino Newsgroup before purchasing a video card. The people there have a wealth of knowledge and the subject of video cards comes up frequently. There have been reported issues with certain cards from time to time and the newsgroup is the best place for info about Rhino.

I don't believe Rhino uses any of the special firmware built into the workstation cards so unless your going to use other software like Solidworks or 3DS Max in addition to Rhino, the extra expense of the Pro cards may be a waste of money.

The built-in Rhino scanline renderer is CPU only, but if you add a third party renderer that uses GPU rendering, you need to take that into account also when considering your choice.

I am currently running Rhino with an HD 6870 card and I have had no issues with it. Viewport manipulation is a breeze. Rhino should work quite well with any modern game or workstation card.

Wow you were not kidding I reviewed all the specs and no the flashing will not work.
As the OP mentioned the firmware flashing used to work well.

But as for the hardware. The shaders and Core are no different.

This looks like it might be a little better for rendering

*Note : You can substitute brands for the mobo, graphics, memory, hd. I just went through a picked Newegg best rating items in the general categories of what would fit your build price range.

The 550w psu should work well enough, if you plan on having like 5 hdd's then maybe go to the 600w+ range just to be sure.

a CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-650TX 650W - $110

Thank you everyone so far for all the help and suggestions.
I have gone over to Rhino's newsgroup and have read must of their posts involving graphics cards and have made one myself. While I wait for an answer from them I figured I would update this with some more information about what I use to see if maybe any of you use the same software and have experience with it.

I use rhino 3d and sketchup for modeling. Grasshopper which is a plugin
for parametric modeling. Adobe illustrator and photoshop. Not really 3d
max but occassionally. For rendering i use vray, irender, maxwell render
,and artlantis. My models range anywhere from 1 mb to 200 mb.

I'm currently looking into which of these programs is able to utilize the Quadro cards but if anyone happens to know that would be great. I would like to know which, if any, of these programs would see significant improvement that it would be worth dropping the extra money. Also would the Quadro 2000 be sufficient for my needs Since that is at least closer to my price range?
If crossfire/sli a viable option with the work station cards? I mean would it be worth it to get two lower grade ones or should I just stick with trying to get 1 card.

Also, personally I am not a fan of AMD CPU's just because from all the benchmark testing I see they pale in comparison to the Intel line. But would the 8 core FX or even the 6 core Phenom (which I have read is better than the FX) speed up rendering significantly? Or would I just be better off sticking with the 2600k i7?

Thank you again, your help is much appreciated.

i7-2600 can be OCed to 4.4GHz max with the raise of BCLK and probably few multipliers... Not sure how they did it but it works up to 4.4GHz

Thanks for the help.
