Question Graphics card upgrade

My son is currently using Nvidia rtx 2060 6gb and wants to upgrade to a 3060 12gb or a 4060 8gb which one would be the best to upgrade to? They are both around the same price?

Also is there a difference between branding of graphics cards, what would be the difference between Nvidia and Asus 3060 and 4060 if that makes sense

You'll have to give more information than that. Here's a list of things that we'd need to know:

• What resolution does your son game at?
• What is the refresh rate of his monitor?
• What games does he like to play?
• What is the make and model of his power supply?
• What is his CPU?
• What is his budget?

The only thing that I can tell you for sure is that brand doesn't matter. All of the companies that produce video cards have been doing it for well over a decade and they all know what they're doing. Spending more for an ASUS card is nothing more than a fool's errand because the performance of all the cards from what could be called the best to what could be called the worst would be, at most, 5%.

I've owned cards by Albatron, ASRock, Gigabyte, Palit, Powercolor, PNY, Sapphire and XFX. I've been very satisfied with all of them. They all just work (provided the card isn't defective) and do exactly what they're supposed to do.

I will say however that if your son just uses his card for gaming, he'll be much better off with a Radeon card because he'll get far more performance for his money. The prices of nVidia cards are just ridiculous and I would only recommend them to someone who uses their card for content creation and would benefit from CUDA. I've used both GeForce and Radeon cards and in gaming, you can't tell one from the other as they both do exactly the same thing.

Not worth it.
Performance difference rtx 2060 to rtx 3060 is ~ 15%.
Performance difference rtx 2060 to rtx 4060 is ~ 40%.

Such small performance increase will not be very noticeable. Your son will be disappointed for sure.
Shoot for something with at least 2x performance compared to rtx 2060.
