Okay Keyboard Masters, or just forum users with opinions, am hoping someone can help. Have worn off the letters from my four year old basic Lenovo rubber dome wired keyboard and am considering replacing it with a wired mechanical keyboard. Would be using it with a desktop PC/Win10. Have done some preliminary research and am hoping someone can give this grasshopper some advice and recommendations.

Considerations:
  • Not a typist, but I type a lot (documents, spreadsheets, email). No gaming.
  • Adjustable, non-obtrusive white backlighting and a black keyboard. Don't need light patterns or colors.
  • Prefer minimal light leakage around the keys themselves.
  • Keystrokes not too loud. (Current keyboard is borderline too loud)
  • Average force needed to press keys - not too high.
  • Need a number pad as part of the keyboard.
  • Quality is more important than cost; can afford to buy "up" but don't want to overspend either.
  • Volume control is a nice to have but not a need to have.
Am looking for recommendations for specific wired keyboards and what you like about it. In terms of switches, online research seems to point to Cherry and Gateron, not sure if there are others I should be considering and why?

Also, am trying to get a sense of whether the "bump" would be annoying or not. For example, "Cherry MX Brown has a noticeable bump". How does the user experience compare to a rubber dome keyboard? How does it compare to a linear switch with no bump, when used for typing? Are there switches with less noticeable bumps?

Thank you :)

IMHO, You can't compare a rubber domed keyboard with a mechanical keyboard/switch. It's like comparing an apple to an orange.

Yes, tactile, non clicky switches are what you need to look at though there are people who prefer to also type with linear's. You didn't mention the budget you've set aside for your keyboard and a preferred site for purchase.

You could look into a hotswappable keyboard that you can later customize along the tenure of the keyboard.
