hi all,

planning on a 2gb kit for my new comp. ddr2 800. gskill.

but theres the 2gbhk and the 2gbhz.

the hk has lower cas timings, 4-4-3-5 compared to 4-4-4-12, but ive heard the hz is better for overclocking. i doubt ill need to oc, my q6600 will not exceed 400 fsb, i highly doubt it lol. but either way, is one better or is there not much difference? are both micron d9's?

thanks

I use 4 x 1Gb of this G. Skill PC6400 with my q6600 and ASUS P5B Deluxe. Rated at 800 mhz. will overclock over 1000 mhz. I did damage one DIMM overvolting it and had to RMA one 2 x 1GB kit. Check the testimonials. 91% give 5 *****

No, the HK uses ProMos, but also overclocks quite well with slightly more voltage than the HZ. Not much in it really....

Pretty close, the Ballistix probably just has the edge, but it'll come down to the actual modules you get and how they perform..... heard recently that the G Skill HZ doesn't have D9GMH in all kits now, some have a different variety of D9, but not sure if this affects how far it OCs.....

so which would you recommend? the hk's or the hz's? the hz's are only 15 dollars more, so either is fine. It's not like i personally want d9gbh chips ir anything, i just want good performance. honestly the 4-4-3-5 timings on the hk are pretty impressive. im leaning still towards hk, any reason against?

Anton: Shop for best price between the two... its THAT close. The hk is a beast in its own right as 4-4-3-6 @1.95V prime/orthos stable. Does Ballistix get that good under 2.0V ?

Yeah, I'm starting to like the HK too.....

Not sure how good ballistix is under 2.0V, but if you're OCing it not sure why you'd want to be under 2.0V :)

Good choice getting ballistix, but remember you may have problems trying to overclock 4 sticks, as many mobos don't like it

@GSte:

"if you're OCing it not sure why you'd want to be under 2.0V"

Because its cooler, wastes less energy, etc. BUT these sticks have little headroom. Essentially the lower Voltage is a sign of higher binning. Frankly I'm surprised the guy writing that up was able to do it. There are numerous reports of stock 4435 at 2.0 or 2.05V. The sticks rated default is 2.0-2.1V.

@Anton:

Yeah, have to agree, keeping 4 stick 'in-line' is not easy. Usually the default timing go up a notch.

Going to 4Gb is worth it for XP64 or Vista64, and it would be better to go 2Gbx2, if merely for the sake of easier and more efficient ops. That GSkill company makes a nice PC6400 for that also. Nothing wicked, but how does 4-4-4-12 at 1.95-2.00V sound?

Oh yeah, completely agree if your only overclocking within certain bounds.... for some reason I thought he wanted to OC the crap out of the RAM.... tend to forget that we don't all have the same aim :)
