hi,

im looking to purchase some 2gb 800 ram for my computer im going to build with a gigabyte ds3 motherboard. It will be my first build and I'm planning to try a little overclocking, nothing too drastic. G skill seems to be pretty well liked and have good compatibility for the ds3 (although ds3 says it takes 1.8v ram). The question is, which set do I get. I know they say that lower timings are better, but there are so many sets, with different timings and different voltages? I need some explanation and recommendations here. There are what I'm looking at from cheapest to most expensive:

I know its not a huge difference but I want to know if its worth spending an extra 15-30-55$ and I'd like to know why. Thanks!

If you get the latest rev of the DS3 it should boot up fine initially with any of the sticks, then you change the voltage in the bios to 2.0 or whatever. Basically, the more expensive sticks are specified to run at lower timings. The HZ's the most expensive set that you listed uses memory chips manufactured by micron and are of very high quality, people have been able to get them up to 1000mhz at spec voltage and timings...quite a great over clock. Do you need to spend the extra money on them? No, but if you are getting a cpu with a low multiplier (like the 6320 or 6420) it will be very useful when OCing. All of these will run at 800hmz which on a 6600 corresponds to 3.6ghz...quite a good OC, but in the 6320 it's only 2.8ghz..which is bleh. People also like to use a 6600 but only with say a 7x multiplier and a 500hmz FSB so thats running the RAM at 1000mhz and the cpu at 3.5ghz. So it all depends on what you want to do. If you are getting a 6600 and will be happy running the RAM at 800mhz then just go for the cheaper stuff.

If you decide that you want the HZ's keep in mind that you may be able to find cheaper memory that uses the exact same chips (crucial ballistix, buffalo firestix, and others). Look around for people talking about Micron D9s or Micron D9GMH or D9GKX. That's not to say that the HZ's arent great, it's just to allow you choose from many options. This website is a good guide to find out what chips are in various lines of RAM. But it may be outdated: http://ramlist.ath.cx/ddr2/

thanks for the response. I'm planning on getting a 6420 and trying my hand at a little overclocking. I was originally planning on getting the second most expensive set because the timings are rated very low but they are a little cheaper than the HZ's.

Hi i just bought 2x 1gb of some g.skill ram last night when i installed it along with the other 2x 512 sticks that came with my system(acer) i got 2 extended beeps at startup and then a message saying my computer is now in safe mode f1 to continue or del to enter setup also it tells me to adjust my cpu freq in the standard cmos settings and when i go to that i cant change the voltage in my bios because its a name brand machine,, after i exit bios without saving it seems to start up fine... i ran americas army last night fine so whats the error oim getting? i havennt tried to boot without the 2 512sticks in..yet.. thanks guys
